Mexico Acknowledges 2nd Mayan Reference to 2012
Edited on Fri Nov-25-11 09:45 PM by Dover

Mexico's archaeology institute downplays theories that the ancient Mayas predicted some sort of apocalypse in 2012, but now acknowledges that a second reference to the date exists on a carved fragment from a ruin site in the country's south.

Most experts had cited only one surviving reference to the date in Mayan glyphs, a stone tablet from the Tortuguero site in the Gulf coast state of Tabasco.

But the National Institute of Anthropology and History said in a statement that there is in fact another apparent reference to the date at the nearby Comalcalco ruin. The inscription is on the carved or molded face of a brick. Comalcalco is unusual among Mayan temples in that it was constructed of bricks.

Arturo Mendez, a spokesman for the institute, said the fragment of inscription had been discovered years ago and has been subject to thorough study. It is not on display and is being kept in storage at the institute...cont'd

1. That is Interesting
but how does it differ from "the Christians" prophesying the end of the world in 1000AD? Or for that matter in 2000AD?

2. Think about how loony people got when the millennium ticked over to 2000
I'm sure they had and have their share of loonies who think a human calendar with an arbitrary beginning will mark the end of the world when an age (or millennium or even century) ticks over to the new one.

I've been through too many prophetic ends of the world to care much any more.

Now if that meteor goes through the keyhole, that will be worth paying attention to because it's predicted to come back and smack into us.

3. For me personally, the start of the new long count is my 50th birthday
So I guess I will be celebrating that the world didn't end, even though it will feel like it did.

4. Most intriguing...
I'm teaching a course on Native America in the spring. My students will likely be chomping at the bit about 2012.
I'm inclined, as always, to go with the actual experts on this- David Stuart included, and he's cited in the article.
