Doin' the happy veggie "jello" dance!
I haven't eaten one of my favorites desserts - Jello -- since going veggie in 1988. I'd long heard stories about vegetarian "jello" but had never seen any in my food travels. I don't know what prompted me, but when visiting my favorite health food store last week I decided to see if they carried any and -- lo! -- they did!

I raced home, fired up a batch, popped it in the fridge, and three hours later scarfed down a bowl of wobbly raspberry goodness. :)

On the box it is advertised as "vegetarian" but, by the ingredients list, if could well be vegan. You can use it just like regular Jello -- it sets up just as solid, I was surpirsed by that.

I think a little orange "jello" with shredded carrots is on the menu soon!

:bounce: :loveya:

Description:

Hain Superfruits are a refreshing, light dessert, with a burst of fruit flavor. For a special treat, add your favorite fruit. Unlike other gelatin desserts, Hain SuperFruits contain no animal-derived ingredients. All natural with no artificial flavors, colors, or preservatives. Vegetarian. Fat free.

Ingredients:
Dehydrated cane juice, carrageenan (derived from seaweed), citric acid, natural strawberry flavor, beet powder (for color), potassium citrate (to control tartness), corn starch, calcium silicate added to prevent caking (derived from natural silica and calcium sources).

I found this at my local Rainbow Grocery store. I imagine you might find it at Whole Foods or other vegetarian-friendly natural foods stores. You can also order it online.

4. I surprised to hear that...
I always assumed that Jello was one of those universally loved delicacies of childhood. I was raised at a time when every family had Jello, Twinkies, and Rice Krispy treats in their kitchen. :)

And yes, I am thrilled. And yes, I am a bit of a freak for it. Thanks! :hi:

3. I loved it but that was before...
I ever found out what it was. :scared: After that, it was easy as pie to say "no thanks". But damn, I did miss the nostalgia of it. Okay, and the taste. :)

7. When people find out I'm a vegetarian
they always give me Jello, they think that is vegetarian. People don't know what is in it. :puke: I am glad there is a some Jello that actually is vegetarian. I have never really been a big Jello fan but some recipes that sound pretty good require Jello.
