Looking for a new printer. I Have a two year old HP that no longer works
since upgrading to Snow Leopard. HP won't say if they are still supporting this model (OfficeJet 5610 multifunction), though I have asked them nicely several times. They have removed my question from their forum.

The Apple driver starts working and dies. I see a job in the Queue for a second or so, then it disappear.

I only need a printer for simple tasks. I am on SS so I can't afford to spend much.

1. There are allegedly an unsupported work-arounds
... Found one suggestion to install the Options (printer support) from Snow Leopard DVD, I did this, but there was no 5610 driver. On a whim, I selected the a deskjet 5700 driver, this allowed me to "Add" the printer, but needless to say it did not print; however, it allowed me to open the printer utilities and select a new driver, lo and behold, there's a "Generic PCL" driver available, and it seems to work fine, for printing at least ...

Use your existing HP uninstall app in the HP folder to uninstall the current drivers. I also manually deleted all of the old HP utility apps as well. Next go to System prefs to make sure that no printers exist in the Print/Fax pane. If they are there, remove them too. Reboot. Go to the HP website and download <the 10.5 drivers for the HP 5610>. Install them. The button on the Printer may not be programmable like before, but you will be able to print and scan from the computer ...

3. Which of the Generic PCL drivers did you select? I see several flavors.
Here's what shows in the Queue:

4. I don't have SL yet: I just gave you some links and two quotes from one of them,
indicating two different tactics some folk said worked for them

5. I've tried just about every workaround I've read about. I might have to give
it up and buy a new non HP printer.

8. Fixed it. First I removed all HP drivers then restarted. I then went to their
site and went to the drivers page. I then downloaded the latest HP drivers for my printer (Officejet 5610) *

I opened a document to print. In the printer pulldown there are two printers showed. Select the HP Officejet 5600 series, not the one with the fax,

go to System preferences and set that printer to default by right clicking on the printer of choice.

Not sure if the scanner works, but for now, I am happy I can print again.

10. I'm over my HP too. Mine doesn't work with old Leopard.
I have to use my big Epson photo printer with the expensive ink for regular crap now. Besides, after 6 months the photos made with the HP fade something fierce. HP has always made crappy drivers.

I'm thinking of getting one of those Kodak AIOs they show on TV.

12. This will be my last HP. I used to think well of them. If I hadn't done what
they say not to do, I'd be a Best Buy buying a new Canon printer.
