Been missing you. How was the visit with the in-laws. Are they addicted to Ain5 bread now? LOL

5. it went well. but they were here over the weekend when I'm working
I got home Saturday night and by the time I did dinner and dessert, other than actually at the table eating I didn't get to sit down til almost 9pm

they had a nice visit though, so it was OK but then the next week on my days off, I ended up working a 10 hour overtime shift and only got one day off

this week I took a vacation day and have tomorrow off for a 3 day weekend

i needed it

and the leftover chuck roast I fixed for them Saturday night is now back out of the freezer and has been transformed into a big pot of stew

the An5 bread is on it's 10th generation and it's damned good sourdough now. my chiropractor BEGGED me for a loaf, so I'll take him in one next week

ehehehehe

:hi:

:loveya:

3. Horseradish is terrific
I love a pinch of it in deviled eggs or even egg, tuna or potato salad

I mix it with fat free sour cream/ff mayo and use it as a spread for my grilled chicken or fish "burgers"

It's also my secret ingredient in my world famous coleslaw....but don't tell anybody...

4. Don't worry...
I'll never let your secret out. LOL

Hubs won't have anything to do with it unless I sneak it into something like the Russian dressing I made for the reubens tonight. He will eat cocktail sauce when I make it and knows it's in there but that's about it.

6. That's the secret of my favorite coleslaw recipe, too -
courtesy of Famous Dave's. People go insane when they taste it, and are always surprised to discover it's horseradish.

It's Passover, which means i'll be picking up some nice, fresh knobs, and the fresh horseradish shreds will be on the table, where they're always wolfed down and more demanded.

Top a burger with fresh horseradish slivers. Mix them into some mashed potatoes, or just top a baked potato with a teeny bit. Oh, how very, very nice ..................

...if they are being served with beef. Yum, yum, yum. A teaspoon of horseradish in a pot of mashed potatoes is teh bomb.

18. I'm making some mashed taters tonight
but I think Bill would protest if there were horseradish in them. Too easy to detect. Sounds good to me, tho. :hi:

20. I didn't know what it was for a long time.
I just knew that the potatoes at a particular restaurant were really delicious. Then I asked about it, and was told about the horseradish. I was told it's an old TWA recipe -- from the days when they used to actually prepare meals for flights.

21. Bill requested garlic buttered potatoes tonight so
I didn't even get to try sneaking it in. I might the next time because it sounds so intriguing. I bet I'd at least enjoy it. ;)

8. I love horseradish so much, I considered growing it.
Edited on Sat Apr-04-09 11:54 AM by troubleinwinter
But I found out that it is INCREDIBLY invasive. Must either grow it in containers or sink metal sheets 2' into the ground!

As much as I love the flavor, I am a real chicken about hot stuff, so mix it with sour cream or if it's fresh grated, sometimes I cut it with grated daikon.

9. Yeah, it's pretty dang hot.
I just ate a corned beef sandwich with just the horseradish on it and freight trained myself. Whoa! Cutting it with some sour cream is a good idea.

I do love it, tho. :hi:

22. My in-laws grew it in a big clay pot.
It was brutally hot, and I say that as someone who loves hot food.

that people either love or hate. Doesn't seem to be much in between.

What kinds of things do you use it in other than the usual?

16. Oh it's great with salmon
I take a hunk of smoked salmon, some sour cream, mayo, green onion and a pinch of horseradish and whir it up in the food processor for a quick and terrific dip or spread on crackers. It's terrific.

finely chopped onion, horseradish, lemon juice, cream cheese, Worchestershire sauce, and miracle whip.

with cream cheese instead of mayo and throw in some capers. I never considered putting horseradish in it. Hmmm. Might have to try that. :hi:

He adores it. I am also a fan, but nowhere near his level of abject adoration. :-)

but the stuff just grew on me over the years. That, coconut, and strong cheeses are the only ways in which Bill and I part ways. I love them all.

25. I made some meatloaf the other night...
and in the ketchup topping I loaded up the horseradish. Tasted more like cocktail sauce. But was it good! Beef and horseradish are friends 'til the end. Or so says me... :hi:

26. A friend makes a great dish with horseradish
Start with jumbo shrimp, remove shell, clean and de-vein (is that the right word?) them. Fill the opening down the back with horseradish and wrap them in bacon. Bake. Heaven :D
