Is a Vita-Mix blender all that?
I saw one demonstrated at Costco a few weeks ago. I didn't buy it because I have a 24YO Oster 16 speed blender that can do just about anything a Vita Mix does except heat food. Though I was somewhat intrigued by it...wondering is it all that?

Can anyone attest to why I need this kitchen toy? I'd rather wait until the blender dies, which it shows no signs of....

1. Put it this way....it's next on my wish list.
First item on my wish list several years ago was a set of good knives. Check.

Second item was a big, honkin' Kitchenaid Mixer. Check.

Vita-Mix is next--a friend of mine has one that I've used (and seriously covet), and it's one Serious Blender. If you do a lot of blending (I live on smoothies in the mornings), or even want to grind grain, it's the best you can get.

2. I have a two speed Osterizer that does great smoothies
but if you want to grind your own grain, then you need something quite a bit heftier.

My quibble with that is that the grain is heated so much when pulverized in a Vita Mix, something that adversely affects the quality of the grain and hydrogenates the natural oils. I prefer stone ground grain, something that doesn't heat the grain nearly as much.

Should I develop a passion for grinding my own, I'd get the attachment for the Kitchen Aid mixer.

4. Sounds like we have the same blender!
Mine's a big retro-looking copper beehive style, and I do love it.

I think at least part of my desire for a Vita-Mix is a serious case of gadget-envy (acquired from using my friend's vita-mix to make smoothies). ;-)

5. Gadget Envy
Yup .... I know that disease. I have tried so many times to overcome it .... but alas ... no success! :)

So now, rather than fight it, I foment it in others!

6. I'm not there yet
But I know I can close to the same thing with my good old blender. I will wait until my old faithful dies before I go for this....

3. i use vitamixes for my store, they are commercial grade but unless
you have every heavy blender usage, it may not pay for itself for a home user

at home I used an osterizer until I got my wolfgang puck stand mixer which came with a blender. it will be all I need for a while I expect

if you really are interested in a commerical grade mixer i prefer my blendtec over the vitamix, it's quieter and has a smaller "footprint" on the counter
