I'm gonna get me a laptop to have at home. I want to be able to sit on my couch and read DU.

And do e-mailing, etc. And some word stuff/typing/work.

Recommendations sought. Thanks!

1. Is price an object?

2. Well, I don't want it to be too extravagant. But I'm not gonna be a miser,
if it keeps me from getting what I need, either.

3. There is a couple of ways to approach this
The Dell Outlet store is a good place to look for scratch & dent or refurbished equipment, but it can eat time. I'd be more inclined, if I went with new equipment to look at HP.

My basic recs for laptops running Vista:

Get Vista home premium or Vista Ultimate

Get at least 2 GB of RAM.
Make sure you have an 800Mhz bus (the highest I think you can get on a laptop)
strive for 4mb of L2 cache on an Intel Core 2 duo processor
Make sure your video has at least 256MB ram
120GB Hard drive minimal
And it never hurts to have a DVD rewrite.

4. If you're looking at the $800 - $1,000 range and are a Costco member...
...check out the Acer Aspire 6920G for $899. Centrino T5550 (dual 1.83 cores), 3GB memory, 320GB HD, Nvidia 9500MS video card with 512MB, 8x DVD-everything ;-) , Vista Home Premium. It certainly compares well with other bricks'n'mortar store offerings, as well as what Dell has around that price range.
