Your thoughts please: Recently I had my computer cleaned of
Trojan horses that AVG said it could not remove.
The well respected computer fellow brought it back, hooked it up for me and checked out a couple of things here to make sure everything was OK. I noticed on the desktop that the Icons for Spy-bot S&D and SpywareBlaster were gone. I asked him why and he said I don't need them. All I need is AVG.

He is the expert but I always read this forum and am constantly reading about the multiple anti-spyware, malware etc programs that you experts have. Needless to say, I wonder why he said I need only AVG..which I have not downloaded AVG 8 yet.

I run IE6 SP2 and keep things updated via "custom" option from Microsoft.
Now another little goodie,

This is a recent change to my system: When I turn off my computer, the option wording has changed. It is as though Microsoft wants me to goof up and change things. If I click "turn off" it will automatically update. I have to be careful to click on the small wording below so that the computer will turn off without installing those updates I have not chosen.

Why is this? I don't want IE7 or the SP 3. Is that what they are driving at?

Thanks for any advice.

1. Are you using the free version of AVG?
If so then it does different things than Spybot. I'm not a tech guy, nor do I play one on the internets, but AVG doesn't clean cookies which is what Spybot does among other things.

As for the update thing your "computer fellow" may have changed your update settings to "ask before install" (don't know the exact phraseology) rather than the custom set up you had before. If you have XP go into "my computer --> change a setting --> security center --> automatic updates then tick "turn off automatic updates" to change it back.

Hope this helps.

2. To get rid of that shutdown option
Start --> Run, type in "gpedit.msc" --> OK, to raise the group policy editor.

Look under Computer Configuration --> Administrative Templates --> Windows Components --> Windows Update.

Click the "Do not display 'Install Updates and Shut Down' option in Shut Down Windows dialog box" line, right-click and choose Properties. Tick 'Disabled' under the Setting tab. Click OK.

3. I would re-install
Spy-bot S&D and SpywareBlaster they are both great free programs that keep garbage off your computer. I would also install CrapCleaner and use it everyday. If you do install CrapCleaner make sure you click out of installing that yahoo toolbar.
I have moved from using AVG to using Avast. If you want to use a better browser try Firefox that will also help. If you use these programs you may not need his service again.
