1. Does Windows Recognize the Drive?
If you go into Device Manager (right click My Computer ->Properties -> Hardware Tab ->Device Manager)

Expand DVD/CD Rom drives.
Is your device listed there?
Does it have a yellow exclamation point?
If Windows sees the drive, but there is an exclamation point then you may have a conflict.
Is the light on the drive lighting up when Windows boots?
If not you could have a loose power cable or loose data cable. Check those first.

If Windows sees the drive, but you can't use the drive, I would:
Uninstall both InterVideo and Nero programs and reboot.

Does that remove the yellow exclamation point? Throw a music CD in and see if windows prompts you to play the CD.

If not, in Device Manager, right click on the drive and select "Update Driver".

If that does not fix, in Device Manager, right click on the drive and select "Uninstall" and reboot.

Upon reboot, if Windows doesn't recognize the drive, then the device could very well be dead.

2. If you uninstalled it or reinstalled a CD burning program it leaves upper
& lower filters in the registry. I had the same thing happen & it took hours of screwing around & finally had to do a complete OS reformat. Of course, after that I found the instructions at Roxio.
