Firefox v Opera web graphics
I've been experimenting with Opera, and something I've noticed is that the graphics, say here at DU, seem "blockier" than with Firefox. Anyone else notice this? I have to enlarge the view since otherwise the type would be way too small to read. Opera version: 8.51
Build 7712

Is this just the way Opera displays web pages or is there an adjustment to make the graphics smoother?

1. Guessing ...

It could be the display resolution. It's been awhile since I played with Opera, so I'm not sure if you can or how you alter this in that browser, but the very first thing I discovered after getting a new, larger monitor and increasing my desktop resolution was that I had to play with the display resolution in Firefox to make some pages readable. I run Linux, and I did not have this issue with Konqueror, the native KDE browser, which I mention only to note that different browsers deal with display resolution differently. In the end, I could not use any of the default settings and had to play around with the custom settings to make everything display properly.

2. Opera has a unique feature...
At least, I never saw it in IE or Firefox.

While those two browsers support making your fonts bigger and smaller, Opera has a nice ability to zoom the entire page, graphics, text and all, in or out (hmm, wonder how it handles Flash?)

The feature is really good for designing websites, as it lets you get the birds eye view of the webpage, without having to change the resolution of your display settings.

I'm guessing that's what is up here - that you enlarged the "view" rather than JUST the fonts.... Not using Opera on the computer I'm using to write this, I can't tell you exactly where the font size setting is, but I remember it being there...

3. Thanks, I'll look into the fonts vs page zoom functions.
Appreciate the tip.

4. Here's the scoop...
I found out I installed it on my present computer. BTW: I stopped using Opera because it lacked the wealth of 'extensions' which Firefox enjoys, esp Adblock and Sage.

OK, in Opera, DON'T use the (menu) View->Zoom feature without understanding it blows up the pictures as well - it is what is giving you blocky graphics (although it's handy at times to zoom up a picture)

You want to use the (menu) Tools->Preferences->Webpages and set your "normal" font and font size (larger) there.

Some webmasters are too quick to sacrifice readiblity for looks and I've found some web fonts to be all but unreadable. I esp don't like the dark backgrounds with like dark grey text. Come on! Give me a break! I find myself having to select all the text to render it readable...

Anyway, that should solve the problem...

5. Perfect, thanks FRF.
I'm still mostly using firefox since I have most of my passwords stored on it, enjoy adblock, and don't really notice the speed difference the supposedly favors Opera.

BTW, if you don't mind answering another question, what version of firefox are you on? I'm still on 1.0.3

Is the new version worth switching to? Will it import your saved passwords, etc?

6. My 1.5 update was flawless, except for a few extensions.
that's about it, no bugs on this end - on 3 systems: Redhat 9, Suse 9, & Umbuntu
