About a year and a half ago I noticed our fluffy mutt cat Mister~M~ losing his fur down the length of both his sides, his belly, around his anus and to a lesser degree on his forearms. But he wasn't "losing" his fur, instead he was licking and chewing it off. I also noticed about this same time very aggressive tendancies emerging that are more characteristic of how intact toms behave and ~M~ has never behaved like that in his previous 4 +/- years. He's still great with people so that hasn't changed thank goodness.
~M~ was born in this house 6 years ago, his mommy is my cuddly Nudgie babygirl:loveya: just had to throw that in there;-) And when he was old enough to be neutered, before he had the chance to know or experience those tom cat urges, he got fixed.
The vet diagnosed his hair loss due to a hormonal imbalance that sometimes happens in neutered male cats (never heard of that before but hey it's not like I'm a vet either:dunce:), gives me 10 or 12 days worth of pills to cram down his throat everyday (fun:eyes:) to balance out his poor wacked out hormones.
The pills seemed to help, but very minimally I thought. I also thought "neutered" meant far fewer hormones to get 'imbalanced' in the first place
So here are two cats, Papa neutered in adulthood, and ~M~ neutered in kittenhood, and both are similarly aggressive ala Tomcat style..? ?
However in ~M~s case the more I read and learned about so called "quality" pet foods the more I'm convinced ~M~ has developed some terrible food allergies which in turn (possibly? probably?) triggered off any hormonal imbalances he might currently be experiencing.
So I'm tackling ~M~s problem from a food allergy stand point and for now only time and continued TLC will tell.
Good luck with your Papa kitty. Maybe some kitty dope = catnip might help mellow him out :smoke:yahmon
