Looking for direction ...
... I've noticed a very powerful aroma of geraniums around me for the last 24+ hours. It's cold, clammy and cloudy here in Indy ... nothing's blooming.

Geraniums don't relate specifically to anyone in my past, so I can't imagine 'who' might be 'bringing' them.

Can anyone point me to any sites that might be able to shed some light on their healing, spiritual or mythological signifigance ?

Thanks !!

1. Not on point, but
I'm learning about essential oils and how to use them properly. Here's some information from a website I just found:

Simply inhaling geranium essential oil calms the body and psyche, and refreshes it at the same time. This may be one of the reasons why it is used for protection. When our bodies' natural defenses have been depleted or subdued to to overwork, depression and a host of other causes. At such times we need to be protected against opportunistic viruses. Similarly, we're most likely to be physically or psychically attacked when we're at our weakest. To give yourself a boost, put a few drops of geranium oil onto a cotton ball and inhale the pleasing aroma. Let its energies wash over and through you, spreading peace and dissolving depression. Visualize the fragrance healing your work or world weary soul. See it girding up your defenses against unwanted, outside, negative energy. Simply getting in control of our lives is one of the most powerful defenses we can achieve, and geranium can help us to manifest this goal. We can't be sure of ourselves if we're depleted and feeling blue. If you wish, put a few drops of the oil in a diffuser and allow it to spread the scent throughout your home to guard it as well. Visualize the desired result, of course. - source: http://www.pride-net.com/oils/geranium.htm

The mystical powers of the geranium are said to be useful in matters of health, love and protection, as well as being a useful tool in banishing negativity and lifting the spirits. Regarded as a flower of remembrance, the upright blossoms of the geranium are said to indicate an upcoming reunion. This flower serves as a reminder to humankind that the past should be held in high regard, for all the personal missteps and failures, successes and triumphs, are part and parcel of the current individual make-up. Red geraniums in particular are considered to be especially protective, adding much strength to an individual's health. When residing in a pot near the cottage of a witch, these red blooms are believed to warn of approaching strangers by their very movements...the flowers becoming magically charged and pointing in the direction of the strangers. Pink geraniums have traditionally been used in love spells, while the white variety is said to increase fertility. In some areas of New England, it was once believed that snakes would not go near where wild geraniums were growing. It was also thought that a geranium in the window prevented flies from entering the house. The properties associated with this flower are believed make it appropriate for the skin...treatment of dermatitis or acne, for example,as well as to tone the tissue. It is also thought to be very effective in lymph drainage and for cellulite treatments. Geranium essence is an excellent emotional stimulant and a wonderful mood enhancer. To dream of a geranium symbolizes long-lasting beauty and enduring elegance. In the language of flowers, the oak-leafed geranium means friendship and the rose geranium means preference. The scented geranium also means preference, but in addition can indicate melancholy, stupidity or folly.

According to an old Moslem legend, the geranium was once a common mallow until Mohammed hung his shirt upon the plant one day in order for it to dry. When it was removed, the plant was covered with brightly-colored flowers which exuded a spicy aroma. A mallow no more, it was now a geranium. -source: (okay, it was written for Aries but it gives some information that I think you were looking for) http://www.novareinna.com/constellation/ariesluck.html

Maybe someone is trying to protect you or make you feel better.

3. No offense but....
Have you ever considered that you might be hallucinating the smell? It's not that uncommon.

4. I thought about it, yes ...
... but my sense of smell has always been keen to the point of annoying to some folks ("Jebus, Lisa .. how can you smell that ? It's a block away!") so hallucinating doesn't seem feasible.

I wandered from room to room at home to see if anything there smelled like geraniums, or if windows were open, etc ... but then the aroma surrounded me again yesterday at my office and there are no plants, flowers, laundry detergent, potpourri etc around ...

5. I would think people with highly sensitive, umm, senses
Would tend to experience hallucinations more frequently than others. Less of a sensory threshold to overcome neural inhibition. Sorry, I'm blanking on the actual science right now. I really need to refresh my reading when it comes to sense and perception. I just tried doing a quick google search but most of the stuff I came up with was related to lowered sensory thresholds in drug users.

FWIW, I've had mild hallucinations as long as I can remember. Predominantly auditory with olfactory and visual running distant seconds. Sometimes I even get to "see" music (without drugs!).

They are extremely infrequent and in no way interfere with my life. They're not so strong as that I am unable to distinguish them from reality. The first couple of times I experienced them I was a little freaked and thought they were external but as I learned more about the brain and our senses I came to understand them as hallucinations which are far more typical in humans than we realize. It's just how we're built and sometimes nerve cells fire when there's no external stimulus. However, hallucinations are so associated with insanity in our culture that few people will admit to experiencing them.

Like I said, I'm not belittling your experiences. I just think you need to consider hallucination as an explanation before reaching for the supernatural. That's not saying that some aspect of nature that we don't yet understand isn't a posible explanation for what you're experiencing, it's just really, really unlikely.

At least you get a pleasant smelling hallucination. Sometimes people who suffer strokes or who have neurological conditions such as epilepsy experience unpleasnat olfactory hallucinations (burning electrical or rubber smells IIRC). However if the smells continue or intesify then it might be a good idea to get a medical opinion.

6. Maybe it's you?
I went through a stage where I smelled "soap". I could never identify where the odor might be coming from. It was a memory maybe. I never figured it out.

Then when right before I would have the woman's cycle (I've moved on), I always thought I had some kind of odor. I checked it out with someone once, and they said they didn't smell anything unusual.

We are so much more animal than we like to think. Bless the sense of smell. It gives us lots of information.
