This is NOT the First Swine Flu Panic

My guess is that you can expect to see a lot of panic over this issue in the near future. But the key is to remain calm -- this isn't the first time the public has been warned about swine flu. The last time was in 1976, right before I entered medical school and I remember it very clearly. It resulted in the massive swine flu vaccine campaign.

Do you happen to recall the result of this massive campaign?

Within a few months, claims totaling $1.3 billion had been filed by victims who had suffered paralysis from the vaccine. The vaccine was also blamed for 25 deaths.

However, several hundred people developed crippling Guillain-Barré Syndrome after they were injected with the swine flu vaccine. Even healthy 20-year-olds ended up as paraplegics.

And the swine flu pandemic itself? It never materialized.

It is very difficult to forecast a pandemic, and a rash response can be extremely damaging.

As of Monday April 27, the worldwide total number of confirmed cases was 82, according to WHO, which included 40 cases in the U.S., confirmed by the Centers for Disease Control. But does that truly warrant the feverish news headlines?

To put things into perspective, malaria kills 3,000 people EVERY DAY, and it's considered "a health problem"... But of course, there are no fancy vaccines for malaria that can rake in billions of dollars in a short amount of time.

1. I agee--look at this with caution

If memory serves, the 1918 flu epidemic was killing hundreds in a short time. 82 doesn't sound like all that many to me.

As I've said on another thread, there are lots of things you can do to keep yourself healthy--and none involve vaccines.

2. It's interesting that the people that are dismissed as crackpots,

Mercola being one of them, is calling it like it is. It seems that alternative health care is pooh-poohed while the real crackpots try to line up the masses for vaccines that have REAL problems & health issues, and MSM helps them along, stirring up fear and panic overkill.

If health care and prevention is the true aim, we'd see real advances in making sure it is available to ALL...and NOT ONLY IN PANDEMIC situations. If and when there is a real pandemic, we cannot afford to have care and prevention for the few...that only makes a bad situation the worst case scenario. The deaths in Mexico were due to people not getting proper health care.

And what about a working FDA? Another entity that serves the public when it works, that was stripped down to bare bones.

4. Mercola is one internet source I trust.

I know he's viewed by some of the medical establishment as being "radical" with his attitudes, but the thing I keep coming back to with him is that there have always been articles and peer reviewed studies that support his points. He's no fan of the drug companies and he's a huge believer in taking charge of your health rather than taking pills which automatically makes him a target these days. It also makes him somebody I want to hear from on the medical issues.

His alert on Swine Flu hit my inbox yesterday, and I couldn't get it to even load all day yesterday--I suspect his site was THAT busy...

His comments about who stands to profit from a worldwide panic feel (to me anyway) dead on, and I also find what he has to say about the manufacture of this virus in a lab to be quite interesting. I'm not usually one for deep dark conspiracy theories, but this is one time I really have to wonder.

Read the article, if you haven't already. Seriously. I was actually thinking about taking this article into GD simply because I think it makes sense.
