Call of Cthulu: Dark Corners of the Earth
Anyone playing this game? I just picked it up, and I am really enjoying it (even though I am stuck at the first action sequence in the main game). First-person horror, really true to the Lovecraft mythos/feel. What's awesome about the first person is there are ZERO HUD elements - no health bars, no compass, no cross hairs, nothing. I also really like the fact that with this first person game, I'm over an hour into the game and the character still has no gun - makes it more interesting and challenging. It's a great step towards immersion. Graphics are pretty good, voice acting is good but could use a little work. Another interesting thing is how they handle effects of wounds and horror - when you are wounded, blood spatters appear in your vision, and your rate of movement starts to slow. The more wounded you are, the slower you move, and your vision starts to gray out when you start to loss too much blood. You suffer debilitating effects to your sanity when you see horrifying things - your vision blurs, and apparently later in the game you start to suffer audio and visual hallucinations.

One thing I don't like is having to equip something from the menu, instead of automatically using it when the situation is appropriate, such as handles to open trapdoors. you also have to be really careful about where you are looking when you press action - it's really easy to open doors when you are trying to slide a bolt to lock them!

I also recommend finding a walkthrough on line - there was no way I am getting through this first action sequence without the help of the walkthrough, and even then it's going to be tough!

1. I've gone through it twice...
The first time was on a harder setting and it was damn near impossible. Hardened Detective, if I remember right. It was also before the walkthrough came out, and escaping that hotel drove me nuts.

On any level in the Gilman hotel, you have to hit the sequence near perfect, or else the fishmen get you.

I had a love-hate thing going but you know, during some of the intense moments my hands would shake and the quick cut-scenes would scare the hell out of me.

This was only played at night, in the dark with headphones, loud. And it's the only game that gave me a nightmare. Literally.

The second go-through was on Boy Scout setting and I really enjoyed it. Not so ridiculously hard. You get 3 weapons at the same time at about 30% and they are not easy to use or aim. They did it on purpose I think to drive you crazy. Like Jack. I ended up a nutjob with a c-rating.

Enjoy, and remember to update us - let us know what you think.

3. I too play it with headphones in the dark
I just made it to the church. The walkthrough is really helpful, i would never have made it through to the save point in the hotel sequence without it.

6. Ok, Robert Marsh is kicking my ass (Spoilers)
I'm at the point in the Devil's Reef point where you have to fight Robert Marsh armed only with a knife. I can't defeat him. I've tried about 30 times. Does anyone know how many time you have to stab the guy before he goes down? I keep the chair/table between us to negate the effect of his life drain/darth vader move, but that usually means I'm too far away to get close enough to stab him before he recovers enough to smack me down. Basically, 2-3 slaps from that guy and you're dead.

Any tips?

4. Waiting for the PC version
It looks like a lot of fun. I play the RPG (d20 version) occasionaly, and I've been looking forward to this game for a long time. It just keeps getting pushed back though. If the x-box version is out, I'm not sure what is holding up the PC version.

5. intriguing! where the hell was i when this came out?
i love cthulhu mythos! now i really have to see this game. already though i'm kinda wishing it was less on the violence, but it sounds so far less violent than the standard FPS slaughterfest that i'm really intrigued. what i loved about cthulhu games were it wasn't about how well you could fight, but how fast you could run and cower! :D if you have a good chaosium storyteller he doesn't tell the new people that all those points they just invested in becoming a combat god are all but useless when things really hit the fan. D4 targets consumed per round, no saving throw -- ha ha suckas! when you see a mythos creature you RUN! AWAY!

do you get to learn any mythos spells in the game? yellow sign? dreamlands travel? books of unbearable evil? :7
