1. It's an interesting experience to watch "Das Boot".
What TCM are screening for you is the cutdown version, and that's a shame, because the director's
cut, at 209 minutes, is amazing. However, I would recommend even seeing a shortened version if
you've never seen this film before, rather than miss out altogether.

It is, simply put, the story of German sailors during WWII, cooped up in a U-boat, and it manages to
convey superbly well the stifling boredom of their life without ever actually becoming boring - no
mean feat. Script, direction and acting are superb, but I also found it interesting to discuss
afterwards how we viewing it in Australia felt towards the men portrayed.

There are those who say "they were no different to the Allies, just sailors doing their duty as our
men were", or those who would still condemn them all as nazis and supporters of the Hitler regime.
The film does make you think about war and propaganda, duty and fanatacism, and where the truth of
it all lies.

The best option though would be to hire the director's cut of this film - I've not seen the uncut
version, but I figure the director knew what he was after and he conveyed it superbly in the 3.45hour
cut.
