1. "Maytime". Sigh.
My favourite Eddy-MacDonald film.

I love:

MacDonald and Eddy
Carry Me Back to Old Virginny
The fairground scene and the duet under the tree
John Barrymore
Herman Bing
The Shadow Opera (especially the orgasmic duet)
The wonderful, campy, over-the-top ending
The whold film!!

We don't see it any more here - the contract ran out for some ridiculous
reason.
:(

2. hey, Matilda!
won't you be able to see it on TCM down under? Do you have a different line-up? :hi:

3. We have a different line-up.
We see a lot of the same films that you do, and sometimes in the same
week, but we do seem to have a much smaller pool to draw from. With our
daily scheduling, you'll find that three or four films are shown over
and over for a couple of days before the programming changes, and that
doesn't seem to happen with your schedules - you have much more variety.

And some films are only released for a particular contract period, and
are then withdrawn, even though they're still showing in the States, so
they're still around. "Maytime", "Naughty Marietta" and "Girl of the
Golden West" are no longer seen here, although the other MacEddy films
are. I have no idea why this happens; it has nothing to do with their
popularity.

TCM Australia is unfair to classic film fans!

4. Okay, I can't let you use such a term as...
...orgasmic duet without begging for some further commentary. Elaboration, please.

5. I'm assuming you know the film,
so I'm referring to the duet at the end of the shadow opera, where she
has to send him off to his execution. As they're singing, her hands
are all over him, caressing him, and as the music moves up an octave,
their voices are perfectly blended for the finale, which ends in a
passionate kiss of a length that must have exceeded the Hayes office
guidelines. You'd swear that he's going to have his way with her right
there on the stage - it's so powerful that either they were much better
actors than people gave them credit for, or there was truth in the story
that at the time, Jeanette wanted out of her forthcoming marriage to
Gene Raymond in order to marry Nelson, but L.B. Mayer forbade it.

The music, the singing, the onstage and offstage drama in the film, plus
the possibility that it was all being echoed in real life, make it one
of the most intensely passionate love scenes in any film musical. It's
glorious!

7. Yes.
Tchaikovsky helped too - his most beautiful symphony, IMHO.
