2. "Gigi" winning is one of those times you can only say "what were they thinking?"
It won against The Defiant Ones, Cat On A Hot Tin Roof and Separate Tables. A victory for schmaltz over substance.

And Vincente Minelli won Best Director for Gigi over Stanely Kramer for The Defiant Ones. Incredible.
