Of the instruments you own, which is your favorite?
Edited on Fri Nov-19-04 12:38 AM by jpgray
Mine is a black, rusted Lotus strat-clone guitar my older brother discarded when he was 14. The knobs emit a squeal of static when turned and the neck pickup cuts in and out, but I love the sound of it more than anything else I've played.

1. Great topic.
Guitarwise, my favorite has to be this really obscure Les Paul double cutaway they made in the mid-80s. The neck man! The neck! I have a great sounding strat that has fret issues on the top (another topic--it needs a trip to the shop).

Basswise, a weird post-gibson Tobias killer-B 5 string. The only other bass I haven't sold over the years is an old Spector... still feels good.

3. Two groups... those for home and those for stage
At home:
a 1930ish Baldwin grand tops the list but ever once in a while my old '57 Hammond M3 takes the #1 spot.

For stage:
the Kurzweil PC2x and Korg Triton Pro are even - I never play one without the other.

Sorry, I can't pick just one... *grin.

Always wanted a nice thinline acoustic/electric with a cutaway.

And now I have one. It's the perfect couch guitar.

6. Fender Frankenstein
I found a chop-job Strat in about '98 or '99 - it's an '84 American Standard Strat body with an '84 American Standard Tele neck (jumbo fretwire), with a DiMarzio split-rail humbucker in the bridge position. Despite its unholy sonic badassitude and general indestructability, it only set me back $300 since its collector value was nil due to all the modding. Since I bought that guitar, all my others have sat idle, including my '71 Les Paul Deluxe.

9. Hmm
My favorite would have to be the 6-string Curbow that I got from a fellow bass player who had it custom made. It was the first 6-string greg Curbow ever created, and it is a gorgeous instrument and the sound is unbeatable. I've played alot of basses and I've never played one like this. It has a rockwood neck that is so smooth and easy to play on, plus, it doesn't bow when the weather changes which is nice. I might post a picture when I get the chance. It has locks down at the nut so the strings rarely ever go out of tune. It has the most crystal clear sound I have ever heard and it feels great to play on, I am truly lucky to own such an amazing instrument. Hopefully Ill get pics by this weekend. Peace

13. I guess my Epiphone EJ-200 right now
I have an acustic/electric version of one also, but it's not as comfortable. I go back and forth on my electrics, but if I have to choose I would say it is my ESP Tele from the mid 80s. It was a very early guitar from ESP and they made a Tele, Strat and a P-bass I think. I got mine because it played better than the Fender. The serial number is 000086. So I guess it is an early one.

15. A 1961 Mittenwald carved-top double bass.
It fell off a stand about 3 years ago and broke the neck. I spent some serious money on getting it really dialed in along with the repair, and now every player who sits in on my bass wants to buy it. I use an Underwood piezo pickup into an Acoustic Image Contra II amp. 25 pounds and 300W rms...it rocks the house.

16. Lotus!!! You are DEFINATELY DA MAN!!!
Edited on Fri Nov-19-04 05:21 PM by no name no slogan
Believe it or not, I too have a Lotus strat copy in my garage-- except mine is maroon. Same creaky knobs, same noisy pickups. That was my first electric guitar, 22 years ago.

Nowdays, I've got four main guitars, depending on what I'm playing:

* Godin Multiac
This is a great all-purpose guitar, good for finger-picking jazz, or even flamenco. The built in synth-access tracks better than Roland's own system, and opens up a whole world of MIDI- and synth-based sounds. And you can also crank it through an overdriven combo amp for some wicked heavy metal sounds, too! This one through an acoustic guitar guitar amp cuts through a three-piece, no problems.

* Córdoba 30F Flamenco
A very cool entry-level flamenco guitar. This one's also nice for basic pop/jazz style stuff, as well. Sounds much better than its price would indicate. I use this for solo flamenco/rumba gigs.

* A Fender Mexi-Strat
I bought this one 12 years ago, and although it's been used and abused over the years, it's still a doll to play. No offense to Gibson players, but I love that Fender sound. Good all-around rock &/or roll guitar.

* A Yamaha Pacifica 12-string (strat copy)
The Pacificas are great, inexpensive guitars for players on a budget. I got this one to add a little 'jangle' to my band's sound. Strap it on, and next thing you know you're one of the Byrds, or one of the guys from the Church.

20. Yeah, but it's seen light use in the last few years
I guess it depends on how you play and how much hell you put it through. Mine's seen only light action in the last three years, so that's probably a big part of it. Some of the electronics are a bit creaky, and there's some rust on the chrome (!!!), but the guitar itself is still in one piece.

I'll probably replace it with something more versatile: I've got my eye on a Godin XTSA which looks like a good all-purpose piece of gear (electric, acoustic and synth controller in one guitar!). I haven't priced them lately, but if I can get one for $800 or less, I'll grab it.

21. If you do get one of those Godin's,
please post a thread about it. I'm always wary of combination gear (too many pieces that have turned out to be 10 pounds of shit in a 5 pound bag), but I'm curious to hear if those are any good.

22. Will do-- I've got a nylon-string Godin Multiac now
Agreed about the 10 pounds of shit thing-- I'm a self-admitted gear junky, and have the same problem.

The Multiac a great guitar to play. I've used it to control a Roland GR-50 and a newer GR-33 guitar synth, and it tracks very well, especially if you're finger-picking. Midi-ing the GR-33 to a decent sampled-sound module really opens things up. I've got a decent piano patch that sounds fairly convincing, which comes in very handy if you're a half-assed keyboard player like myself. :dunce:

The acoustic sound is also pretty good, considering it's basically a piezo pickup. It's not bad straight, but I run it through a Yamaha AG-Stomp acoustic effect, which has some great mic simulators. I've even done some flamenco-style stuff on it, and it's almost as good as the 'real' flamenco guitar, too.

I've sent the straight signal through a distorted guitar amp, and suprisingly (for a piezo) it didn't feed back much at all. Granted it's no substitute for a 'real' electric, but it can do the job in pinch.

Just don't try to do any Yngwie-style solos on it-- nylon strings don't bend too well. :o

18. Unfortunately
I am more into acoustic instruments and this appears to be electric land.

I am torn beteween my alvarez parlor guitar, and my handmade kantele (finnish 10 string zitr\her, it has a very unique way of attaching strigs to the soundboard that provides a very open ringing sound...
upright pieces of wood are anchored to the soundboard. A long round metal bar os mounted perpendicular to the soundboard, and the strings are attached to this bar by twisting one end of the string into a noose that goes over the bar. Thus the sustain is great, and their is a very ringing tone that is obtained)

I am curretnly thinking of getting an inexpensice hollw body jazz electtric. I owuld prefer something with a single floating pickup, but these are not all that cheap. There are some very cheap electric hollow bodies that have come out recently. Oscar Schmidt makes a rather good one with two humbuckings that you can get from Musicians freind for 230 bucks. I have played it and it is easily as good as the Ibanez guitars that have recnetly come out.

33. I've gotten more into acoustic playing in the last few years
I'm really into Flamenco/Rumba music right now, which is almost exclusively played on hollow-body nylon-string guitars, a wood box called a "cajón", and "palmas", which are basically rhythmic handclaps.

One of these days I'm planning on buying an oud, which is a 13-string Arabian/African lute, prevalent in the music of Algeria, Morrocco and the Middle-East. It's almost sitar-like, but without the drone/resonance. Now if I can only find somebody who plays one to tell me how it works...

29. Italian Gordet oboe
I think I spelled it right (I'm not gonna get it out to check).

It's supposedly not as good as the Louree oboe; but I've had it for about 20 years and I think it has a much more lovely tone than the Lourees. Though I do love the lightness of the Louree. I guess there's a trade-off in tone quality; I think the Gordet wins; 90% of oboe players would probably strongly disagree though.

I have a DeArmond m-65C with covered humbuckers that both screams and growls for me, and sometimes can sound, on clean, almost like bells.

My Epi strat copy rules. Incredible Gibson action with that cool-assed twangy single-coil sounds, shrieking on overdrive or hollow, like that sound Stevie Ray sometimes favored when he played sans overdrive.

And my bass ... a counterfeit Alembic that looks like a P-bass and brings the thunder old-school.

And my acoustic ... a beat-to-shit Vantage with action like a Martin. Not the same sound but still worthy of respect.

35. Ibanez JS-1000
Custom shop model. Limited edition in color. It's deep wine red oil stained on a very tight grain basswood. Sustain is amazing. Best neck i've ever played. The radius of a strat, but a little thinner front to back.

I'm a fast player already, but the day i got that guitar, i played even faster. The up and down the neck runs are so easy to do, especially if i'm doing sequential patterns. (The jazz runs using the flatted 5th and the 6th.)

It absolutely screams when fully saturated, and it has a glassy sound when in single coil mode and the amp is clean.

Best purchase i ever made.
