3. Its not everyday someone gets to do something big like that.. People
live their lives waking to work to home to watch tv to go to bed to wake.. rinse and repeat. I don't blame people for having excitement about this. I don't think that person isn't really not going to wash her hand or not continue feeding her children or making love to her partner... That's one of the better happy posts in GD:P. As rational as I am, I'd be exstatic to be in Edwards presence... I'd be happy to have a signed autograph. Anyhoooo.

5. I felt that way when I shook John F. Kennedy's hand, when I was 16 years old. How dismissive of you
to disparage enthusiasm and excitement.

I felt that way when in 1992, I had the privilege of speaking with Bill Clinton, who had just emerged as the front runner.

I saw the promise of hope and true change in his face that day. And I believed we were about to experience a sea change in this country if he were to become the president. I went on to work very hard for his election......I was inspired.

So, what's the deal with sarcastic and acerbic innuendo?

6. I met RFK
Edited on Tue May-06-08 12:41 PM by Two Americas
I spent some time with RFK and spoke with him in 1968. Of all politicians, he had a very enthusiastic following - greater than the Obama following by a long shot.

There were some at the time who were critical of the hero worship of RFK and suspicious of his followers, and said so in much more pointed terms than anyone is saying about Obama in today's highly restricted and suppressive environment. The difference is, that no RFK fans flipped out over this or were so sensitive and angry about having their hero criticized, who were "offended" and outraged that anyone would dare to poke fun at the object of their affection.

I think that was because RFK stood for a real social movement, not a close-minded little fan club that was intolerant of any non-believers. There were contentious debates then - much more intelligent and meaningful discussions than you ever hear today - about real things, not about loyalty and litmus tests. No politician was seen as above or beyond approach, as the end-all ultimate savior or hero, and people prized cynicism and skepticism about politicians. Nor did RFK supporters seek to purge the heretics, as we see with Obama supporters, nor did they see any and all opponents as the embodiment of all that was evil in the world. Nor did they scold and lecture people, as though they had done some terrible awful thing, merely because they had criticized some politician or his followers.

I was just as critical and said the same things about people who were head over heels in love with Bobbie back then. But they were a small minority in the movement, they were not so violently resistant to any criticism, and the enthusiasm that RFK generated was not the same sort of blind loyalty and fanaticism that we are seeing with the Obama followers.

Following RFK around that spring, I came to believe that he was sincere and had undergone a transformation, because of the things he did - particularly an unscheduled and informal visit to 12th street in Detroit. And by the way - the man could speak and he spoke from the heart, a far cry from Obama's calculated and cautious speeches. There were no hordes of chanting zombies attacking anyone who failed to worship at the feet of the all mighty RFK. Many of my fellow activists never got over their suspicion of RFK and were never on board. So what? I didn't see that as some kind of threat to my own support of RFK - as many, many Obama supporters do today - and therefore feel the need to attack those who were still critical of him - as many Obama supporters do today.

So what is with the suppression and intolerance? The resistance to criticism? The all-or-nothing for-us-or-against-us thinking? None of that went on around RFK. Bobbie's supporters took much harsher criticism without going into emotional meltdown or seeing the critics as enemies to be destroyed.

If your enthusiasm and excitement are threatened by anything I have said, it may be time to examine just what it is that your enthusiasm and excitement are about.

8. I think its a different world.. People are American Idoled and infomercialed.
fast paced, on the go, sound bites, snarky, etc... I was reading an interesting analysis on the way that Obama and Michelle dressed.. almost a rehash of a 50's/ 60's look.. From his suit style and hair cut, to her mid-calf dresses/ skirts and bobbed hair with the swoosh.. and don't forget the bobbsy twin looking sweater sets. Its like bringing back a sense of American nostalgia.. a remeberance of old times for the old timers.. and a new look and genuine longing by the younger crowd who is desperate to slow down.. I feel it myself.. I don't want to work 60hrs and my hubby to work 60 hrs and it bring in nothing at the end of the day and someone else raises my children, badly. Its the longing for a simpler time with simpler rules that this time includes everyone. I think it might just be ok.. as long as we work to push the agenda and set the tone. I don't like either corporate candidate. I think they are both capable people. I wish it were John.. but I don't think John is ready to start a new party.. not yet anyway.

9. Excellent response TA
I think you pointed out the very thing that I find so offensive with the Obama movement. Their all or nothing attitude, their for us or against us mentality. I find it disturbing.

Politicians are human. They make mistakes. Not one of them should be treated as saintly, or above making errors, but to talk to most Obama supporters and point out his failings is impossible. They are irrational and as you stated they have "emotional meltdowns".
