Oh noes! Interracial love controversy at Disney!
Won't someone PLEASE think of the children??

Because you know NOTHING is ever simple when it comes to black folks, apparently there has been uproar after uproar over Disney's first black princess, the lovely Tiana. She's so pretty!! :)

First it was her profession, then it was her name, then it was the city in which she lived, and now it's her man.

I just came across this black blog, Acting White. It says it's an anti-racism site keeping tabs on international racism. It caught my eye because of a discussion in GD and apparently one of the bloggers at this site is railing about Disney not having a black prince for its first black princess.

Go to the March 10 entry to see the bloggers comments about this.

I was particularly caught off guard by these particular comments from the blogger:

On a slightly darker vector, it may be interesting to consider that little white girls associating with Tiana, in Disney’s view, might not swallow the Princess or themselves swooning over a handsome black prince. Or perhaps Disney does not want the future mothers of dwindling white America being imprinted so early in their lives with the notion of a black suitor. Disney may not want to take the blame for an up-tick in interracial marriages in about 15 or 20 years.

Am I the only one kind of doing a :wtf: on that?? And then they show a clip of the movie under the headline, "Acting White: Disney's Black Princess Kisses White Frog."

Apparently, the prince has only been described as "olive toned" meaning he could literally be ANYTHING, including black. I understand and thoroughly share the frustration with seeing far too few loving black couples on television and in movies, but does this strike anyone else as being a tad over the top? What are your thoughts on this? Is this a good thing, a bad thing or should this brother just lighten up a bit, figuratively speaking of course. :)

saying, :wtf:

it's stuff like this that perpetuates the idea that all black people think, feel, act as some monolithic entity(or should). it's bs.
i also doubt i could ever be interested in anything written on a site entitled, "acting white." :puke:

that "label" is divisive and infuriates me.

3. LOL That is such a good point!
i also doubt i could ever be interested in anything written on a site entitled, "acting white.

That is too true. :)

I just read Chovexani's (am I spelling that right??) OP in this group on acting "white". The comments were absolutely fantastic and it was truly one of the best OP's with some of the best comments I've read on DU. I wanted to say something in that thread too but considering she started it damn near five years ago, I thought it would look stupid if I did. :)

That was one of the best things about growing up in SW Atlanta in the "bougie" part if you will. Everyone was expected to do well in school; everyone was expected to go to college; everyone was expected to become professionals. And when I was growing up there in the 70's and 80's, this was one of the blackest parts of the world outside of Nigeria. I did not even know a white person my own age until I started college. So, I never actually heard the "talking and/or acting white" while I was growing up, thank goodness. But knowing how that idiotic phrase is one of the ways that black folks like to hurt one another, I can thoroughly understand why just seeing that phrase (even as a joke) would be enough to piss someone off.

2. Apparently, it was Fox News that tried to make a meal of this "controversy"...
Whaddaya suppose their intent might be?

4. Fox might have started it, but it looks like old boy at "Acting White" is trying to finish it
Fox's intent is easy enough to glean, but what could his be???

...there are some that just don't dig "interracial relationships," particularly when one of the people is a black woman....and one of the "critics" happens to be a black dude.

i don't see many dudes gettin' urinary about their brothers dating (or marrying) women of other racial groups. but they have MUCH to say about sisters, doing the same. :eyes:

you can evaluate that as you see fit. ;)

6. Ain't that the truth!
i don't see many dudes gettin' urinary about their brothers dating (or marrying) women of other racial groups.

Do you think that's what this dude's problem is??

Do I even need to go through his blog to see what he thinks about Turk and Carla on "Scrubs"; Will Smith and Charlize Theron in the (annoyingly bad) "Hancock"; Foreman and 13 on "House"; Burke and Yang on "Gray's Anatomy"; (the beautiful) Blair Underwood and Miranda on "Sex and the City" etc. etc. etc.????

7. I hear you...
also doubt i could ever be interested in anything written on a site entitled, "acting white.

the name alone disqualifies it from serious consideration by me.
