HILLSBORO, Ore. — A live-in caretaker who attacked her 93-year-old charge will go to prison for more than seven years and emerge without the $25,000 the man left to her in his will.

Linda Jean Barrett pleaded guilty this week to attempted murder, assault and other charges for the attack on retired Army Col. Virgil Brown.

Brown died in September of coronary artery disease, nine days after Barrett attacked him with a five-pound antique wooden clock and a ceramic serving bowl.

The medical examiner was unable to determine conclusively that there was a connection between the two events, said Jeff Lesowski, Washington County senior deputy district attorney.

The caretaker said she felt entitled to some of the money and said the man lured her to the job with the money and “bashed” her mentally. But after finding out she could face 16 years in prison, she relinquished claims to the man’s estate and in exchange took a 90-month sentence as part of a plea agreement.
