FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — Fort Bragg’s Womack Army Medical Center says it will stop providing birth announcements for publication to protect solders’ families.

The Fayetteville Observer reported Thursday the hospital is making the change because of worries the information might make the children targets for abduction.

The medical center commander, Col. Terry Walters, told the newspaper the hospital is following national recommendations to reduce every chance of the risk of infant abductions.

Cape Fear Valley Medical Center in Fayetteville continues to provide birth announcements for publication. A hospital spokesman says parents can choose whether to release the information.

The Army hospital has elaborate precautions to prevent infant abductions, including wristbands, secure areas, alarms and lockdown plans.
