Editorial: Iran act wearing thinIn trying to compel Iran to give up its nuclear program and the weapons that would come with it, the international community has a tough challenge: How do you raise the heat and keep it there without the pot boiling over?
Washington and Jerusalem have a routine: America keeps up the pressure with rhetoric and actions such as sailing several aircraft carriers into the Persian Gulf, while Israel strikes when it sees even a hint of regional nuclear activity.
The trouble is, the routine’s getting old.
Adm. Mike Mullen, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, is right: As overstressed U.S. ground forces continue to slog it out in Iraq and confront a resurgent Taliban and al-Qaida in Afghanistan, the last thing the U.S. needs is a war with Iran.
And Israeli officials say they aren’t ready to mount an attack on the Islamic republic any time soon. They admit they’re planning for one, but they aren’t ready yet. No one has figured out how to counter all of Iran’s possible countermoves, from missile barrages to local attacks by regional proxies Hezbollah, Hamas, Islamic Jihad and others.
