WASHINGTON — Congress has passed legislation quickening citizenship applications for those serving in the U.S. military.

The legislation pushed by Sen. Charles Schumer, D-N.Y., creates an FBI liaison with homeland security officials to speed up the review period for those in uniform.

The measure was crafted after complaints that the citizenship process was slow, particularly for those serving overseas who could not make interview appointments.

An estimated 34,000 foreign-born troops have served overseas in Iraq and Afghanistan. Lawmakers say citizenship applications from troops have been delayed months, and in some cases, years.
