Officials at Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island, S.C., are planning a sprawling new barracks complex that will replace some of the oldest housing on the island.

Construction could begin as early as March or April, and will take place in three stages, said 1st Lt. Josiah Nicely, a spokesman for the recruit depot. It will result in housing for at least 2,000 recruits in 3rd Recruit Training Battalion, a headquarters building and facilities such as a rubber running track.

“Current 3rd Battalion barracks were built in the 1960s and their sizes are not adequate to meet new requirements due to ‘Grow the Force’ initiatives,” Nicely said, referring to plans to grow the Corps to 202,000 active-duty Marines by the end of fiscal 2011. “This project was planned to construct a new 3rd Battalion training complex in maintaining the highest quality of training possible for Eastern Region recruits.”

The Defense Department announced Sept. 24 that Walton Construction Co., of Harahan, La., was awarded a $25.26 million contract for the project. If two options are exercised, its overall value would increase to $77.98 million.

Construction is expected to be complete by September 2010, Nicely said. It will be coordinated through Naval Facilities Engineering Command in Jacksonville, Fla.
