SAN DIEGO – The elevators will be busy hauling boxes and bags to spanking new apartments, but today’s “move-in” day for the first group of new “Pacific Beacon” residents isn’t any ordinary move.

The modern, glass and metal high-rise complex on the edge of Naval Base San Diego is the military’s first bachelor enlisted housing built as a public-private venture.

The three-building, four-tower complex, built for sailors E-4 and above, has 941 twin-master suite apartments each including a bath and walk-in closet, in-unit washer and dryer, balcony and modern kitchen with energy-efficient appliances. The apartments will average almost 1,000 square feet. The more than 1,800 residents will have condo-style amenities at their doorstep, including a rooftop patio and pool, fitness center, entertainment room, lobby Internet café, parking garage and an outdoor landscaped quad.

Some of the apartments will boast expansive views of the mountains or San Diego Bay and the Pacific Ocean. Under PPV, residents would pay as rent the equivalent monthly housing allowance that they rate. At Pacific Beacon, master suite rents are priced at or below the current E-4 allowance, which currently is $1,374 a month, and utilities except cable or internet are covered by the rent.

Capt. Rick Williamson, the base commander, will welcome the first residents who will move into their apartments in the main building, Building A, on Friday morning, Navy officials said. About 200 residents have already signed up to live at Pacific Beacon, said marketing director Kim Lear.
