Riders take stand for fallen heroesMany veterans can recall vividly the ugly gestures and contempt aimed at them in airports and bus terminals as they returned from duty in Southeast Asia. Now, some of them have pledged to protect families from the pain they endured during that conflict 30-plus years ago.
With a fleet of motorcycles and flags in hand, the Patriot Guard Riders deliver a silent message of respect and patriotism. And in the 15 months since the all-volunteer PGR was formed, membership has grown from three riders in Kansas to more than 68,000 members nationwide.
The PGR is the only group that has been successful in suppressing the Rev. Fred Phelps and his Westboro Baptist Church, said Heidi Beirich, a spokeswoman for the Southern Poverty Law Center. The organization has listed the church as a hate group.
"(The Patriot Guard) has really taken Phelps on and beat him back," Beirich said. "It's really nice what these people are doing to take their personal time and devote it to help these families."
