US Has New Afghanistan Supply Routes
US Has New Afghanistan Supply Routes
January 20, 2009
Associated Press

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan - A top U.S. general says America has struck deals with Central Asian states allowing it to transport supplies to its troops in Afghanistan through their territory.

Opening up northern supply lines to Afghanistan is important for the war effort there because most supplies for troops currently must pass through insurgency-wracked northern Pakistan.

Army Gen. David Petraeus said today he reached transit deals with Russia and several other Central Asian states on a recent tour of the region.

The route through Pakistan has posed problems for the U.S. Pakistan reopened it following yet another brief closure Monday after suspected insurgents killed a soldier and wounded 14.

The famed Khyber Pass, where growing militant activity has prompted several temporary closures in recent months, was reopened in the early afternoon, said Fazal Mahmood, a senior government official in Khyber tribal region.
