NG Helps With Jackson Basic Training

The State

During a meeting about a year ago at Fort Jackson, S.C., commanders learned the post was running out of lieutenants and captains to help run the training and support units. And with the active-duty side of the Army shorthanded fighting two wars, post leaders wondered how they could plug the openings.

"I've got a great solution," said Col. Tammy Miracle. She called the S.C. National Guard.

Today, two dozen members of the Guard's 218th Brigade Combat Team, who returned in May after a year in Afghanistan, are on active duty at Fort Jackson.

The Guard members also are pioneers. Fort Jackson is the first of the Army's five basic training posts to use Guard officers in training units, Miracle said.

For some, staying on active duty proved to be a blessing because they didn't have jobs in the civilian world waiting for them.
