1. I can't believe the condition of the boats they operate.
Just kidding.
Great shots.

2. Bonnie Dick, I was always surprised by how shoddy their ships looked in
photographs in their magazines for military professionals. Cracks in things, rust, etc. were pretty par for the course.

Now, I realize, they're operating in a much harsher environment, but still. I was surprised.

As someone who volunteers on a historic sub, it doesn't take much to make the inside of the sail start to look like crap. But some of the rust on compartment doors, etc. inside that thing IS surprising.

It was truly a dog's life in the Soviet Navy and the Russian Navy wasn't a whole lot better, though I think they stopped forcing people into the sub service.

I volunteer to smell 'that smell'. Makes me feel like 4 years old again.

And what a nice change of pace the former navy guys are from the folks I worked with on Capitol Hill.

Are you near Rotten Groton?

Here's a photo of dad, though he's kinda small looking:

7. Impressive photos!
I sent the link to my 14yo son. I'm a ground pounder. My son and I were able to tour a fast attack sub in Norfolk this past fall while I was attending a conference and our boats are incrediable. Then seeing up close how big the Russian Boomer is and the condition of it....spooky. You navy guys in that sausage tube...may hat's off to you.

9. There was a recent teevee show about dismantling a Typhoon class sub
They were very dank vessels.

Huge.

But dank. I can't imagine anyone serving on them and feeling comfortable.

10. What the heck was that Arcade game on the Typhoon?
I didn't know Russia was known for any other video games besides Tetris.
