...an assurance that Senator Domenici "supports veteran" but no specifics about how. Pressed for details, the phone answerer offered to send out a summary of Domenici's support of veterans. Se said she'd pass along my concerns about opposing any further cuts to veteran's benefits and larger allocations for the VA.
Senator Bingaman's answerer thanked me for my call, reeled off a list of supplemental appropriations for Veterans' health benefits that the Senator has supported, and assured me that the Senator would certainly oppose any attempts to reduce benefits for returning troops. On parity, he said that the Senator supported parity but that none of the bills entered so far would solve the problem. I asked if the Senator would support a bill to provide parity and he said that if the budget issues could be worked out, the Senator would probably support such a bill, but the House would have to take the lead. He offered to put me on a mailing list to receive updates on veterans' issues.
Rep. Udall's phone answerer said Rep. Udall opposes efforts to cut veterans benefits and has worked on the Committee on Veterans' Affairs to expand benefits, receiving a 100% rating from veterans' groups. Assured me that the Representative is aware of the challenges ahead regarding Iraq deployment returnees and is working to get them funding for care that will meet their "special needs." Recommended me to the Representatives' website for more information. Asked if I was a veteran, was interested to hear that I wasn't and thanked me for my support.
We have a big military presence here so it's not surprising that most of our congresscritters keep in touch with veterans' issues.
supportively, Bright
