I love The West Wing but this one totally baffled my husband and me -- the spinning camera during the party scene was really annoying. A little of that goes a long way! There was nothing that dramatic going on to warrant such out-of-the-blue direction. The director was Alex Graves, who has done several West Wing episodes before. I've never been so bothered by direction that I actually went back to the beginning to see who the director was and then looked him up on IMDB.com.
And while I usually don't mind the flashback episodes, this one was a little harder for us to reconcile as to what was going on.
Though, admittedly, I like postmodernism. I like the way that it abandoned the traditional time narrative to focus on theme/concept. I realize it isn't for everyone; I liked that it actually made you think. Then again, I'm an English teacher
