Kerry "troubled" by Hayden CIA nomination

May 8, 2006

NASHUA, N.H. --Massachusetts Sen. John Kerry says he's troubled and has "serious reservations" about President Bush's nomination of General Michael Hayden to be director of the Central Intelligence Agency.

Kerry says his concerns stem from Hayden's involvement in the Bush administration's domestic surveillance program, which Hayden used to oversee as the former head of the National Security Agency.

1. Oh, Sen. Kerry was in Nashua today?
And Iowa on the weekend. Ahmmm, okay. I will watch WMUR news tonight and see what NH is saying about the trip.

I'm not surprised that Kerry has serious reservations about Hayden. That NSA stuff is arrogant and was specifically called out in the recent speech.

And a few direct quotes.

"I'm very troubled by the nomination because he is one of the main supporters representing Donald Rumsfeld who helped to put in place the programs of spying on Americans and has been one of the biggest defenders of it," Kerry said.

...

"We passed the law that gave them all the ability to protect America, which I obviously want to do, but to protect America and also protect the constitution," Kerry told reporters after a formal speech to the Professional Fire Fighters of New Hampshire.

"We gave them a court that they could go to on the shortest notice necessary. If they need to fix (the law), we'll help them fix it, but we want to do it in a way that honors America's respect for our constitution," he said.

8. I saw 'MUR news
Joe Biden and John Kerry were invited to address the NH firefighters. (Kerry had the intro of a real NH person though. LOL! This guy had a thicker accent than I do!) Wesley Clark is addressing them tomorrow.

Kerry did well. He got a good reception from his buddies there. "I think of chile, I think it tastes like victory." LOL!

Bush Pushes General for CIA Job
By BET.com Staff and Wire Reports

Posted May 8, 2006 – Should a career military man head the CIA, the nation's civilian spy agency?

Critics across the political spectrum argued Monday that President George Bush's nomination of Air Force Gen. Michael Hayden as the new Central Intelligence Agency director represents a major conflict of interest.

"I'm very troubled by the nomination because he is one of the main supporters representing Donald Rumsfeld, who helped to put in place the programs of spying on Americans and has been one of the biggest defenders of it," Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass, told The Washington Post. Rumsfeld is the Secretary of Defense.

Hayden is the principal deputy to National Intelligence Director John Negroponte. If confirmed, he would replace Porter Goss, who stepped down suddenly Friday.
