ATTENTION PHOTOGRAPHERS! Architecture is the March contest theme.
Here's the time line:

Submission thread will be posted on March 17.

Prelims will be posted in the Lounge March 21-23.

The final 10 will be posted in the Lounge March 25-27.

This is more in keeping with how the contest was run in the early days, none of this week long voting process in prelims or finals, and the finals are held on the final weekend of the month. Everyone has a good 10 days to shoot something new if they want.

The contest needs to be over early in the month because I'm going before my professional credentialing body on March 31st, which will be a four hour gauntlet ceremony complete with oral exam. :puke:

Since I suck so badly at shooting architectural photos, I'm really excited to seeing what you all come up with for submissions! :bounce:

Good luck, Photographers! :patriot:

1. Thanks!
Looks great, can't wait to get out in (what's supposed to be) the beautiful weather this week! I think this 10 day window will be perfect for most of us.

2. Because I'm bored...
and only one person has answered my OP, I'm going to play with myself.
(And just shut up with the innuendos already, F.Gordon, DS1, and Touchdown! :P)

Here are some I might have entered in an architecture contest:

Gothic Reflection (originally taken for the Reflection contest)

Baltimore Anglzzzz

Smithsonian Staircase

Southern Grandeur/Three Sweeping Staircases

27. I can recall many great Archie Pixies you've posted
Edited on Fri Mar-10-06 01:30 AM by F.Gordon
Over the last year. I can remember one in particular that you posted that would be awesome. Think "box" then think "outside" then think "frozen custard" then think "drugs" then think "is F.Gordon friggin' insane?" then think.... "what can I enter that will really freak out intheflow?"

Remember.... it's not about the contest it's about pushing intheflow over the edge.

Ya' know I love ya intheflow
:pals:

Edited for no particular reason. I just intentionally frug up words and stuff so I can edit. I just love editing. It gives me a purpose. Makes life worth living.

reminding me of Evergreen so I had to go dig out a pic. Though when I went looking up the name it looks like the River Road Plantations survived.
I didn't get to go into Evergreen but here is a pic from the road.

22. Wow!
Thanks for posting that! It give me a very clear indication of what my house probably looked like before Katrina. I absolutely love those sweeping staircases. Where was your photo taken?

of Oak Alley. We were stuck on traffic behind a house on the way back to New Orleans so I had the chance to take some pics through the bus window. The building being moved was a slave cabin that they were taking to another old plantation house that is being renovated. Wish I had gotten pictures of it, lots of no trespassing signs, 8 foot plus tall fence with razor on it around lots of acres. Trespassing signs said violators would be shot, no questions asked. This was in Sep. 2003.

Behind the house.

7. Great
I have a much needed vacation starting Thursday. I get back just in time for the submissions. Hope the local yields some interesting photos, if not, so be it, I suspect I will have fun anyway.

Great photo by the way, love the single eye on Ben in focus with the spin in all it's glory. ;)

8. Is this pushing the architecture theme?
Haven't decided to go color or black and white. It seems black and white would remove distracting colors on the top right and left, and focus attention to the zig zag of the planters. Of course I do like the color of the mulch.

9. This works as an architecture photo for me, alfredo.
It's human spacial design, so that's architecture, right? As for the color, why not just crop that fence out at the top right? Because you're right, the color there is distracting but the red mulch and slightly green on the walls is very appealing.

11. I think you are right about cropping the image.
Not sure if I will use this, I am using it to feel out how far I can go in what constitutes architecture.

10. I think of architecture the way I vaguely understand Frank Lloyd Wright ..
... practiced it - coupled with the natural landscape and context. It seems to me that the surroundings, plantings, slopes, and colors are a critical component. While a bare urban cityscape is often chosen, stripping it down to shapes and shadows, I'd be far more inclined to attend to the more holistic photos incorporating seasonal colors and adjacent landscape.

12. That's what I am thinking about.
I am big on shadows and light, lines and form, but this time I want to seek out how a structure relates to its surroundings.

13. I was going through my photos last night.
Usually with buildings and statuary I like to play around with black & white and sepia. Since we just did went without colour, I have a couple that might work. Some old door ways and a shot under a bridge. Are those too focused, or should I use something showing more of the structure?

14. I don't think statuary would count as achitecture.
Edited on Wed Mar-08-06 01:18 PM by intheflow
But anything else spacially designed for human use can be included.

I think a door is perfectly acceptable, a la my Smithsonian Staircase photo further up the thread.

Same thing for the bridge, although I'd prefer to see the focus be on the bridge and not on the pretty sunset silhouetting the bridge (for instance, like this beautiful winning shot by Raging In Miami).

16. Sure!
It's a human construct that has form, style, and spacial functionality. Sounds like arcitecture to me!

17. OK, then I've got something.
...unless I find something that catches my camera's eye in the interim.

I should have qualified statuary as being a subject for black & white. Not as subject matter for the contest.

Cheers

19. Of course if the statue is part of a structure, like the lions in
front the the Library in NYC, or the golden statues on the bridge in DC, I would think it would be OK, but it seems the statue shouldn't be the sole focus.

24. Can I post a picture of our rental apartment,
the other half of our duplex, which we've been refurbishing between tenants? All I've had time to do the past two weeks is pull up and replace carpet, paint walls, wipe down vertical blinds, and mop floors. Oh, and attend the Iditarod starts. Now we're done, but I'm beat. I don't even know where to start with this architecture thing --
