4. Thanks. I vacillated, and then submitted the seamstress. I thought
there was too much of an area of the blue scarf. I had a lot of market pictures, this one is in Cairo.

2. Hello!
:hi: I love this group but I'm not a photographer so I lurk, looking forward to new postings. I mean through the months I've even looked at every one of the 20 pages and wish I can peruse the archives, as well. That's how much photography means to me.
This pictures in particular caused me to burst into tears. My grandmother was a market woman in Africa back in the '40s until her death in the '90s. I just remember as a child seeing some of the few photos ever taken of her in the market with the other vendors, practically in the same garb and working hard as the woman in your photo. And it's such hard work, from what my mother has told me. I'm not sure how to express it, but it's just that this photo really stung me in the heart and I thank you very much for posting it.

3. Now I'm misting up with you. How sweet of you to share in what
way and why my picture touched you. Did you see my photo of the seamstress in the contest?
I think it is wonderful you hang out with us, and I'm glad one of my pictures brought to around to introducing yourself here.
I am kind of new here myself, and as long as they let me, I'll stay around. We think we're the greatest on DU :)and I welcome you.

I appreciate the welcome. :)
Yes, I did see the seamstress. She is lovely and the light does fall just right on her shoulder. It's really interesting seeing the work photos because I think it seems all of the subjects are at various levels of serious concentration. It makes me look at the world of work in a whole new way, not to be taken for granted and in a beautiful way.

6. Oh that was in one of the contest threads
I might add, it was the only thread where there was no woman in it.

Guess the random number generator thingie did that. My entry had a woman front and center, too. Plus there was your seamstress, the lifeguard, etc.

I love this photo, but I think I like your entry even better!

7. Okay that Fem person is NOT TOO BRIGHT
You know the one complaining about only male workers in one thread? Sheesh, I mean, like we are going to go into an office building and take pictures of people inside without permission. Obviously we would take pictures of people in public places such as streets. I am guessing that at least 75% of the people that work on streets are male.....

But this is what really got me. She said there were only two pictures of women in all three threads--the lifeguard and the Muslim (she had to identify that!) seamstress.

Well, my friggin' picture had a woman smack dab in the middle of the picture. Admittedly she was wearing a mask, but you see, the Fem person just ASSUMED that was a man--HAHA talk about sexist. Actually you could tell she was female if you looked at all.

I think one of the NYC horseback riders (on the left) is female too. At least that is what I thought.

Oh, well, at least we didn't slight cats or dogs!

8. That DUer made a good point but . . .
it annoys the heck out of me when people project their own agendas on to me. Maybe they don't realize how many of the photographers in this group are women? Apparently our work and creativity don't count for anything.

I knew the person in your picture was a woman right away. There may even be a second one in the background? You could be right about the cop and I think there are several women in bluediggers picture too. Maybe not equal representation (and yes, that is something I will consider in my own photography) but it's not sufficient grounds for hostility. Someone always criticizes these contests for not being sufficiently PC or inclusive. The criticism is helpful sometimes, but not always constructive.

10. I love both your photos
This one and the one you entered in the contest. Both amazing real-world, slice of life type pictures.

Try not to let that poster get to you. I'm going to think about what they said (the initial point anyway) and move on from there.

Just to pull us back from soft femininity and pulchritude, I give you MachoMan (and btw. it's obvious to me that the cotton mill worker is a woman, and so is the cop)
