MAY PHOTO CONTEST- THEME!
No sense waiting and wondering for your next assignment, intrepid DU photographers! The May photo contest theme will be...

"Scene at a National Register of Historic Places site!" I want you all to get off your butts, get out, and go somewhere! You can find a list of places to go here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_National_Register_of_Historic_Places_listings

There are more than 80,000 locations available, so start planning where you are going to go now! You have the next three weekends to do your best! I will start the submission thread on May 11 and we'll go from there. Standard rules will apply. I don't expect a bunch of architectural studies, but if that is your thing, go for it! I will want to know where you were, so make a note. For our overseas members, try to find a local national equivalent, or at least some place of historical significance. And please remember that many of the locations are privately owned and respect the owner's property rights!

Here is a shot I took at the Francois Cousins House (c.1794) on Bayou Liberty in Slidell, LA last month:

Good Luck and Have Fun!

1. I applaud your swift, bold action
...and not just because I lived (until recently) for a decade in a place where virtually the entire town was on the register.

18. Yeah, well,
I figured if my prize was going to be running the next contest, then I would pick something I wanted to see. I know you guys often run polls to choose the theme, but since I have no technical skills or savvy, I thought I would just choose a parameter that didn't favor anyone (I hope) and let you all apply your creativity as you see fit. I'm hoping for landscapes, architectural studies, macros of bugs and plants, textures and focal planes, and a child sharing an ice cream with a dog!

I know what you mean about your former town. I'm in New Orleans - something like 19 Historic Districts...

2. Fabulous. You did not let grass grow on your victory, and you know what...
I looked up my town, and there are about 5 of them in walking distance from my house, and that entire cemetery I just showed from my Easter Sunday walk qualifies. :)

But then, I'll be gone on a camping trip to Sedona and the Painted desert starting in a few days.
What to do?

I think I'll take my camera along....

there wouldn't be enough choices in NYC. Ha! Multiple places in my own neighborhood, as well as Central Park and all over the city. No problem.

Not to worry - I'm on a contest sabatical...

I'd have gotten my butt kicked in the last contest and I suspect the same would happen with this theme as well...

The possibilities are endless.

... as a public service?? After all, why not make a contribution that shows our communities? The context is provided.

That's an excellent choice. I just looked at the listing of such places in Dubuque County, Iowa and there's no shortage of choices there. I've already got pictures of most of these but any excuse there is to go out and get some new pictures, I'll take it!

22. Not to complain, but...
...this topic heavily favors those on the east coast and "older" areas of the U.S. For example, it would appear that the New England and eastern seaboard states, taken together, have around 26,000 of these places. By contrast the equivalent west coast area (California, Oregon, Washington, Alaska) barely has 6,000 - less than a quarter of those on the Atlantic side of the country.

24. It is true that
There are more sites east of the Mississippi. What with the sites being of historic interest, it is only natural that they will be more prevalent in the longest and most heavily settled parts of the country. For the purposes of this contest, however, you only need to visit one. If that is a hardship for you, how about finding somewhere more accessible to you, and telling us why you think it should be on the list. Fair enough?

26. It doesn't really matter to me...
...since I'm not even sure I'm going to enter this month. And I've got at least a couple of photos of old-time ships on the Register if I should change my mind. But I did think it was worth pointing out that there's a heavy eastward skew on the list.

(Apologies to Californiapeggy) I gave you all three weekends so you could make plans to visit your chosen locales! (And to try and get the contest aligned back into the proper month. It seemed to be drifting forward.) You have one weekend left. Submission thread will open on 5/11. Better get busy!:hi:

a 5k race on historic Beale street?

or the sculptures of Mexican cement artist D. Rodriguez in Memorial Park Cemetary?

I almost entered the 5k for street scenes. I think I'll go with that. I feel a little odd entering something based on someone's art. It is cool though.
