Infranview--cropping?
For reasons too boring to go into, I am having to rely mostly on Infranview for photo editing now, until I get a whole new computer, hopefully sometime in the next month.

I can figure out most stuff in Infranview, but I am stumped as to how to crop photos. One would think that the scissors at the top would do that, but no, that just takes a big hole out of whatever seems like should be a crop (in other words, the exact opposite as to what should happen).

Definitely a decent photo processing software package will be on my list, but it would be nice if I could use Infranview for photo cropping in the meantime, without going into the (unmentionable words) Kodak software.

1. I don't know anything about Infranview,
but since Adobe Bridge has certain "limitations", my photo finisher suggested that I try FastStone Image Viewer. It's free and quick. I'm new to using it, but have found that it's great for quick edits. Check it out here: http://www.faststone.org/.

3. Thanks
I'll look into in when I get the new computer. One problem is that my hard drive is full and can't really be expanded. Oh, well, it's a few years old.

5. Good recommendation!
The batch convert/rename and lossless rotation features alone make FastStone a worthwhile program to have on hand, and the editing capabilities and histogram viewer are nice bonuses. Everyone should have this program.

2. Change Canvas Size
Edited on Mon Feb-22-10 11:31 AM by HappyCynic
Use "Change Canvas Size" under the "Image" menu. Put in negative values for sides you want to crop. eg. If you want to crop 200 pixels off the left, use -200 left, 0 right, 0 top, 0 bottom. Make sure "If negative values used: add canvas to inside" is NOT checked.

4. Thanks!
Mine was named something a little different but I found it. Awkward, but it's free so I guess I can't complain too much. :) This information will help.

6. All you need to do is
to draw the box around the portion of the photo you want to keep with your curser and then click edit from the toolbar. When the menu box drops down click on crop selection.

I use Irfanview a lot as I don't have Photoshop on my home computer. :hi:

7. Good to know
I don't use Irfanview for cropping (no Photoshop either - I use GIMP) so I only knew the one way to crop. Good for getting exact crops, pain in the ass otherwise.

Thanks so much. I wondered why it had to be so awkward. Great to know this.
