May I recommend a documentary

"Smash His Camera," a documentary about Ron Galella, possibly the king of the paparazzi. The shear volume of photographs is mind boggling. It also addresses privacy versus the first amendment. (Where's Carlos these days?) It's available on Netflix Instant Play.

my only critique is the lack of identification of some of the people and how they fit in...

I love the asshat painter who dismisses all of photography as "a merely technical, a no-nothing could do it" yeah, like to see him try.

The tall grey haired guy was Graydon Carter, Liz Smith is the older blonde woman, the dark haired one was Elaine (recently deceased, of Elaine's Pub where a lot of it was filmed)

I mean, I guess these people are all so self-important, they assume we should know who they are.


I was very amused at the end, with the bimbo who had no idea who any of the photos were of.

Chuck uses a 20x24 Polaroid large format, a camera that I'm seriously jonesing to get my hands on.

7. I watched the segment with him again

I think he is simply jealous that he was not a target of Galella. I believe he (Close) thinks he is the biggest celebrity of them all, and thus his dismissal of Ron and his techniques.

8. I don't really think that Chuck Close

is worrying all that much about his place in the art world in relation to Ron Galella, actually I don't think that Chuck really worries about his place in the art world at all, he's in the permanent collections of every major museum.

And I recommend you watch that episode of Iconoclasts you really get a good glimpse of his process.

I'm not a huge fan of Ron, I do admire the sheer volume of his work and his ability to capture an era.
