<<<<<The Theme for the April Contest is Negative Space >>>>> and here's the Contest Schedule
Edited on Sun Apr-03-11 10:50 PM by Mira
The theme is Negative Space, and you can now start shooting and looking.

The start for the Submission gathering thread will be on Monday April 18th AM,
and will run til Thursday April 21st PM

Preliminaries will run from Friday, April 22nd at Noon until Sunday the 24th PM.
Finals will run from Monday April 25th AM until Wednesday the 27th PM.

This is not etched in stone, if I make changes they will be minor and I will inform the group.

This way you have 2 full weeks of time to get a photo, and I can't wait to see what you come up with.

I do hope we'll have fun with this contest,
here is a photo of mine I hope you like.

5. Thanks back to you. I think this shot would benefit
from a hairline black border. But I don't know how to do that without jumping through unfamliar hoops.

6. Here is how I do a one pixel border
in PhotoShop.

I create a new picture of the identical dimensions and fill it with black.
I then set the width and height cropping parameters to the dimensions - 2.
The cropped image is then pasted into the black image - leaving just a thin 1-pixel line all around the edge.

There is more than one way of doing each of these steps, but the above represents the methodology.

Eg, for a 500 x 400 picture, a 500 x 400 black image is created, and then a cropped extract of the original picture of 498 x 398 pixels is pasted onto the black image.

9. Here's what I do.
If you use Photoshop, the Single Row Marquee tool will work. Drop verticle and horizontal lines on the edges of the pic and fill with black.

10. Wow - the first is mathematically perfect - and the second lightening fast.
And both work perfectly.

Thank you as well, Mz Pip

11. For a 1 or 2 pixel
frame I find using "stroke" easiest and fastest. http://www.scrapjazz.com/topics/Computer_Center/Software/852.php

12. OH WOW - my day for learning. I'm so glad I asked. Thank you CC for doing it.
I like the way that looks! We may have some photos coming in that will be helped by a tiny border like that.
Very nice!

13. I never knew that - thanks!
I don't use PShop tools too much, so I don't know much else than the basic functions.

15. My dear trusty elf if you enter this, just be sure you don't win again. I'm tired.
I'm having to assume you found this and took the picture. I did not see the very obvious faces for a while. Now I see nothing else. A classic example of the theme.

Really nice!

16. Dear Mira,
not to worry, I swiped it from the internets.

I probably won't be joining in this time around, 'cause I'm in a decidedly non picture-taking frame of mind these days.

And plus, I'm not about to risk having to ask you to bail me out again! :D

I have this little Kupferstich that someone gave me as a present, by a not unknown 16th cent. artist named Hans Sebald Beham. It doesn't make the profile faces though, unfortunately.

19. Welcome! Please do this Gary,
go down the current page of posts in this forum, and find all that start with <<<<< and are by me, Mira.
You will then see what has transpired from the search for a theme for the April contest, to the various discussions that have arisen from it, along with the selection, by popular vote, of the current theme "Negative Space".

You will learn that we have til a week from today to create our entry, or find it from your personal archives. It must be a photo you took yourself.

Next Monday the submissions will start, and will go a few days or until 30 entries are reached. I will not accept more than thirty, that is our common cutoff, though the host/hostess is allowed to change that for his/her contest.

After that, follow along, and you will learn.

That's all I have time for right now, but a hearty welcome to you again, and don't hesitate to ask more questions as time goes on.
