I hope to get some of my own work up soon and am looking forward to seeing everyone else's.

An thank you to all who helped make this group happen, I've seen a lot of talent so far, so let's get going:thumbsup:!

Funists are mostly artists who quit to play music then came back to art.most of it is figurative.

2. I'm no artist....
but I do make mobiles and windchimes that sell very well and are carried by our local art gallery and have been the featured "artist" there a few times. I'll post some pictures in a while.

My secret ingredient is bamboo, which I grow in my own yard here in Pennsylvania. My other regular materials are Brazilian agate slices and synthetic "cat's eye" spheres and beads made only in China from the same stuff used to make fiber optic cables. And lots of copper wire that I strip from standard household electrical wire and bend to suit. Sometimes I use shells and other found items.

that's nice of you to say, and, of course, there is art in any creative act. I just think that an "artist" makes a fuller commitment to creativity than I do. It's an entire lifestyle; I just dabble.

4. Hi all!
What a great idea for a group!

I draw and paint and have taught classes in using colored pencils for Botanical Art. My two life-long passions are art and politics.

When needed, I also build furniture and make quilts. (If REALLY needed, I can do masonry projects and replace the flange and wax ring underneath a toliet. :P )

17. hi zookeeper
got your pm, and think it is fine to put those kind of comments in the thread.

the gallery that hosts my page is dedicated to helping women artists overcome those trade-offs. they are a great organization. the website is a nice deal. you get a page for $100/yr. it gets a lot of traffic. and you just plug into their template. no design headaches/costs.

masonry, hmm. i am working on a tile job right now, but i have done some masonry projects. i have a nice fireplace in my basement. i love that stuff. i love cement. i love tile. i will post some pics later.

22. Thank you.
It is one of my latest. It was painted from a photo I took at the Korean War Veterans Memorial over looking Hyannis Harbor this summer. There were alot of flowers. I really wanted to make the painting look like a painting and not a photograph. I wanted it to be loosely painted and I was less concerned if anyone knew what the original source of inspiration really was.

13. Yay! The art group is here! :)
I'm Melanie, a full time Fantasy/Pin Up artist from the Chicagoland area. I've been living up near Wauconda/Crystal Lake for the last 3 years, love the fresher air, not too crazy about the Nascar loving neighbors, but they keep to themselves mostly so it's not too bad. :)

Anyone else in the comics and related industry? I've done books for Sirius and SQP, and I'm right now working on newer projects.

Here's my newest piece, I just finished it (it's a bit busier than I had intended, but that isn't unusual for me). I also work in color, colored pencil and Copic markers, but pencil is faster. :)

My website is at www.MelanieArt.com
(disclaimer: naked people inside :)

I really look forward to participating here! :hi:

31. Nice stuff
I guess I prefer your less cartoony work; I've worked in the animation industry for 20 years, but I've never been a big fan of cartoons-go figure!

Well, I'm not part of the comics scene, but I have a few good friends who are. One of them is Jeff Smith ( www.boneville.com ) who I've known since I started in animation 20 years ago (he was my first "boss" in the industry, and he, his wife, and I have kept in touch ever since). I have several friends who have worked for DC and Marvel over the years. Most of them I met through Disney (I was a Character key/ intern ombudsman / review board member for Feature Animation). I've met many other artist through Jeff Smith, but it's hard to remember them all!

What kind of a living can you make doing this type of artwork? Pinups are something I enjoy doing (love drawing the human form), and I'd love to get away from working just for megacorps, but I don't know how rough it would be to go solo the way you have (I know my buddy Jeff is unusual in the comics world, and that's why I haven't followed his lead. Most who try fail horribly).

33. This is so cool, I'm up late and stumbled across this group.

I am a painter, am represented by a couple of galleries, one in London, one in Nashville. I'll have my work up at the Outsider Art Fair in NYC in January (last weekend in January)at my dealer's booth there. I teach a few courses at the Museum in my town, Mixed Media Drawing and Collage. Most of the paintings I'll post are mixed media and encaustic paintings (pigmented beeswax with resin) They are made incorporating drawing, collage, thread, encaustic paint and poured beeswax.

I'm just getting the hang of posting pics on blogs so my apologies if this is too big.

57. Fiber Artist/Textile Designer here
Got my BFA in Fiber Arts at UMA/Dartmouth and I'm currently working as a color analyst(nights), but am getting my own studio this Feb. also. WhooHooo!
I want to concentrate on contemporary textile paintings to make $$ and hopefully that'll enable me to be a true fiber freak/weaver/painter.
My favorite medium, aside from yarns and fabric, is stuff that usually gets thrown out or is largely ignored. My latest creations are Christmas Spirit Dancers made from twigs. I'm also a weaver and have 4 looms...I also design for Jacquard looms.
My goal is get a website up this year and I'll post photos when I figure out how to do it-thanks for the welcome!

60. aspiring artist here....
I did free lance graphic design and commercial illustration for 10 years or so, then went back to school to get the necessary background for medical/scientific illustration. Ended up becoming a biologist instead. Now, after 15 years in research and teaching I'm beginning to pick up my pencils again. Nothing to post (and not likely to be anything postable for a while), but it's good to know there's an artist group on DU!

61. Pastelist Here
Fell in love with the intensity of color the first time I tried pastels. Wow.

Also, I draw some cartoons. Every day I "draw" a cartoon note for my little boy. It usually has to do with what's going on with him or the family. Anyway, he's 7, and I hear the notes get passed around a lot at lunch! LOL One teacher sought me out because she checks the note each day. I've saved the notes over the years, and they've amounted to a huge visual journal of sorts.

62. Pastels are really cool
My mother used pastels for portraits and they were always beautiful..Pastels can be very bold-or very delicate.

69. I do a cartoon or two every day
I work in pastels usually...but with so many motherly responsibilities and such...I haven't had as much time. (Plus my mother has taken ill and I'm her power of attorny.)

ANYWAY...I take time every morning to make a family cartoon for my son's lunchbox! It's something!

You're right -- CReaTe!

66. I think a lot of people on DU don't know about this group. Perhaps you can
post a link to it on General Discussion sometime. I'm sure more people would come on over then.

I tried to reply to this thread once before but somehow accidently ended up creating a whole new thread. So I won't go into a lot of detail here but just wanted to add myself to the master list.

70. So glad to join the Artists' Group! - Scientist-turned-watercolorist here
Edited on Sat Feb-05-05 07:51 PM by Nothing Without Hope
I've always had these two sides of myself - the science/math side and the drawing/painting/writing side. For a long time I worked in academia and then in biotechnology as a research scientist, but now I am doing other things. It's such a joy to have that side of myself de-repressed.

I did oils and pastels years ago but a few years ago I finally decided to go for what I had always admired but had not yet seriously tried: watercolors. I was fortunate to be tipped about a fantastic -- really the ideal -- serious beginners' class at the DeCordova Museum in Lincoln, MA, which is just down the highway and a totally gorgeous, inspiring setting. That class taught me how to handle the medium enough to get past the initial "insurmountable-frustration" stage and into the range where I can keep learning but meanwhile produce things that I like. I am continuing to take intermediate/advanced watercolor classes, now at the Lexington Arts and Crafts Society, which is just down the street from the sites of famous Revolutionary War battles and is a great place for artists. There are active art associations and many art museums and galleries in many of the surrounding areas; the Greater Boston area is a real art hot spot. In fact, pretty much all of Massachusetts is.

I really, really love the watercolor medium for a lot of reasons which I'd be all too happy to share with anybody wanting to discuss them. I think it will remain my main medium, but I have also taken a class in acrylics (for when I want that very different kind of feel -- I don't want to go back to oils) and also try to keep drawing with various media.

My style is mostly reasonably representational, and I favor images with some kind of nature as part of them and an archetypal, somewhat mystical feel. I don't have any work up on the web to share with you as yet, but I have sold some and had some up on the wall at a couple of exhibits.

Any fellow watercolorists out there are encouraged to talk about the medium with me!

A truly amazing, massive, web site resource for the watercolor medium which all watercolorists should know about is the Handprint site, where another scientist/engineery-turned-watercolorist (Bruce MacEvoy) has posted the most incredible range of information about the medium that you will find anywhere. It includes the most comprehensive tables of the physical characteristics of the various pigments, made by different manufacturers, sold under different names. You won't believe it. Worried about pigment stability to light? Check it out here. Who sells the "best" cobalt blue? How do the different brands of watercolor paper or brushes behave? Read all about it. Want to find online sources of any kind of watercolor tool or supply? No problem. Want to read about color theory, palettes of colors used by famous watercolorists, almost anything related to watercolor in any way? Just keep exploring. The home page of the site is here:
http://handprint.com/HP/WCL

OK, that's surely more than enough for my first post in this group! I hope there are some other watercolorists out there so we can talk shop!

77. I may need your help!
My publisher wants me to do a picture book in watercolor (my usual medium is acrylics), and the only watercolor I've done in 15 years were small spot illustrations like this one:

it took me ages to do each fairy because I was so stressed about the medium. If I can't talk them into allowing me to do it in acrylics, I think I'll need to pick your brain a bit, if that's OK.

Thanks for the link, too!

72. Art teacher here
Hopefully, I will be getting back into my own art, soon. I have the space, but I have to find the time.

I did a career change into art teaching after years in the business field and motion picture industry. I have an undergrad degree in fine arts, and I generally have done drawing, painting, photography, and film.

78. Wow! We have very similar backgrounds
I also worked in "business" (advertising) and the motion picture industry for a number of years before teaching art at a local college (I also have a BFA). I couldn't make a decent living at it, though, and went back to freelancing full time a few years ago. Teaching is one of the most personally rewarding, difficult and underpaid professions in the world. I salute you!

I worked in insurance and the computer industry before resuming art.

Well, I did do visual display for department stores...

Teaching is fun, though, the most fun "work" that I've had.
