Did my first HIIT session today
OK. So I learned I really can't let the treadmill go to 7 miles/hour. :P Almost threw myself off the machine. :silly:

I was shaking by the time I was finished. Wow, am I still tired.

2. It was funny!
I was trying to keep from laughing at the same time I was trying to prevent a trip to the ER!

3. I have had better luck doing HIIT on the elliptical!!!
I am pretty uncoordinated so the treadmill would be disaster for me.

I just read thru your HIIT thread -- I wanted to say that every time I have done HIIT it has worked for fat loss. I would do 20 minutes 3 times a week, and do 'regular' interval cardio the other 2 or 3 days.

Somebody also suggested to me doing this --

20 minutes of HIIT to get into the fat burning zone

followed by

30 to 45 minutes brisk walking on treadmill at high incline

As soon as I have recovered enough from my shoulder surgery I am going to try that.

4. Wow! 20 mins
that seems like a good goal for me to work up to.

I'm starting with a men's schedule that is split in 8 wk segments.

5. That schedule looks challenging -- thanks for the link! (they have a good/real hard ab routine too)
Ab Boot Camp -- I was never able to do the exercises on an incline bench like it suggests though

6. Yes, I looked at
the abs workout too. I might attempt it when I get in better condition. Probably on a flat surface or a chair. I"ve also considering going back to something we did when I was little: putting up a bar across a door way and several times a day, when you pass through, do a couple of chin ups, leg lifts, etc.

What irritates me is there isn't a lot of emphasis on strenght trainging for women. Everything's cardio, cardio, cardio and maybe stretching. You're not going to get stronger or build muscle with that. Really good info is very sparse.

7. I think we're supposed to be dainty or something
"Tone" I think is what it is. Where you do a bunch of low-medium level cardio to be as thin as possible and then do lots of reps with a very small amount of weights so you don't really increase muscle mass. Boring! And not much of a workout either. I feel better after exercising if I'm sweaty and sore.

I'm going to try some of those ab boot camp exercises tonight. I doubt I'll be able to do those side ones, I might first try them at home in case I look like a fool and can only get an inch off the ground.

8. It's that persistent lie
that if you do "too much weight training", you'll get bulked out like a man. And by implication, start to look not like a woman at all.

Not true. We don't have the TESTOSTERONE to build the kind of muscle mass that men do. Sheesh.

I don't know what female body builders do, but I don't want to look like that.

I do want to look like the woman who writes www.stumptuous.com She's in fabulous shape, and not at all overly-developed. Ditto the women in http://www.pilobolus.com/">Pilobolus

9. No kidding

I think most "body builders" look a bit strange because they have so much muscle. I just don't think it's attractive for either sex to be that huge (there are so many guys at my gym like that it's scary) but that's just an opinion and obviously some people like it.

Any woman who thinks she's going to easily bulk up is nuts. Aren't mens testosterone levels 300 ng/dl or so ? Normal ranges vary with each lab but, the highest normal I've seen for women is 100 ng/dl, and most considered the 70's to be normal. I'd guess the women who look like that have some "chemical" help but I honestly can't say for sure.

Edit: I couldn't remember all those ab exercises so I did a few. I was able to do the lower abs on an incline, but not very steep. I'm not sore today either. I actually tried to do the side ones on the floor and boy am I weak there. Upper abs were fine. I'll have to make a list of them and take it with me next time.
