KOEB meeting, Friday 5-6-05
Sometimes, when the newsman has a wild look in his eyes, you
wonder if he's not thinking of ... oh, I don't know -- hopping a
bus for New Mexico, perhaps?

(For the EDV who dotes on this: *Note wrist fur.*)

Ok, that sounded weird.

See you during the commercials, have to go up four sets of stairs to get to the cable tv. I have got to do something about that.

Now they are bouncing.

Every time I think fundies can't get lamer, one of them fools me.

So glad Keith remembered what the guy he interviewed said earlier in the day and repeated it. And that the guy himself said he didn't understand why women would fight so hard for the vote, only to vote the way some man told them to.

He may be a gay-disliking Bushie, but at least he respects others' right to vote their consciences. Bully for him.

144. There was some discussin in GD
about reporting this "church" to the IRS. Funny thing about the Baptists is that one of their objections to the RCC is the Credo (Creed) & the insistence of the Church that you believe the Creed as interpreted only by the Church. The Baptists (& most Protestant denominations) historically felt that people should read the Bible & decide for themselves, hence the insistence on making sure everyone knew how to read (think: public education). You had to be able to read in order to read the Bible & be "saved." Which is why most Protestant denominations don't baptize children until they reach the age of reason & not when they're babies--you had to be able to understand what you were committing yourself to before you were given that sacrament.

Up until recently, we were urged to read our Bibles & make up our own minds (which is why some Republican church members walked out of that church too; what the preacher stated contradicted what they believed).

159. Actually, most Protestant denominations practice infant baptism.
The "take it for yourself" part comes at Confirmation.

But Baptists were the first to insist on adult baptism, with full immersion. There are a few others who insist on adult baptism, but most of those are evangelical, not mainline protestant.

166. Yeah, but at the same time...
as I'm sure you don't need to be told, Protestants in general did a whole lot to promote the very idea of educating the general public and not just the landed gentry. I don't think a lot of people realize that. Because, of course, so long as you believe in a religion that tells you you need to hear the service in a language other than your own and have a priest intercede for you with God, you remain dependent on the thoughts and teachings of others. Whereas, if you can read the Bible for yourself, in your own language, and are taught that you can pray directly to God instead of having to have the help of a priest or a saint to stand in for you, that opens up the whole can of worms to...thinking for oneself. Interpreting the Bible for oneself. Relating to God oneself.

And once people start doing that, who knows what they're liable to do next? They become so drattedly hard to control...it becomes so much harder to keep them downtrodden and subservient...which is precisely how some people would rather see us all be!

64. Ok, but remember, you asked! LOL (contains pics)
Lets start with two weeks ago. I needed new brakes for my van -- price tag - $749. Three days after that expense, some one hit my van while I was parked in the lot at work. Of course, no one saw what happened so I eat the $500 deductible. I have been working extra hours covering someones vacation and getting ramped up for a big special project at work (which has now been postponed twice) so, ok ... I can cover those expenses with a small pinch and a wince.

So, last night, I came home after a long, long day. Didn't get in until almost 11 PM. Beat - dog tired. I go to the potty and flush as usual, but I don't hear anything. I lift the top off the tank and surprise -- there is no water in the tank. I begin to worry about what problem just might be happening now. Since I have a well I know I have lots of water, I just can't seem to get the pump to work.

I couldn't sleep last night very well. I woke from my fitful sleep to announce to my son (who was to attend his first ever prom tonight) that he couldn't shower this morning and possibly not this afternoon either. (I did arrange for him to be able to shower somewhere else, but that added to the frustration of the whole day and stressed him out a bit before his big night too) So, I call the plumber before 8 this morning to try to catch him before he leaves for the day. I reach him and he says that he will be over very soon. He shows at around 8:30 and begins to "diagnose" the problem. Well, he thinks it's the pump control panel. He goes to get a replacement part. He returns with a "helper". ( I now have two of them on the payroll for the day) They replace that part and well, that doesn't fix the problem. He calls another friend, who shows up with coffee and a plan. They need to pull the pump up from the well and see what might be wrong with the pump itself. (I now have three of them on the payroll for the day) We work together to pull up 400 feet of tubing to reach the pump. (Incredibly messy job with baby poop colored rusty sludge all over everything) Finally, at around 2 PM I have to leave to get my sons tux and his dates flowers and make sure that the shower arrangements for him are still in place. I return to grab the camera batteries to discover that the problem was not the pump but the wiring to the pump. It had frayed and broken in several places and needed to be replaced. Ok, I said, lets do it, and rush off to where my son will be showering and dressing for the prom.

I tried to put all the fretting aside and enjoy this moment with him, and I did a pretty good job of it, if I do say so myself. He gets off to the prom with great fanfare and much fawning.

Then, I return home to find that they are just finishing up replacing the pump in the well. Then I get the bill.

$1,175!!! I write the check and hand it over. The plumber was nice enough to ask if he could take it to the bank today, or should he hold it for a day or so. LOL

Needless to say, I make around $20,000 a year (not counting child support) to support three people. I don't even want to do the math to figure out what percentage of my yearly salary I just spent in the last two weeks (not counting the additional prom expenses I had to chip in for because my 17 year old lost his job last month!).

I feel like I can NOT get my head above the high water mark for more than a gulp of fresh air these days. Yes, I am having a personal pity party tonight. Wanna come? LOL

But, here is my lovely son and his sweet girlfriend on the steps of her high school (they go to different school) before leaving for the prom. His sweet face and her excited delight almost made up for the crappy month I have been having... almost.

. . . All I did today was hassle with the computer and then hassle w/ my husband about the computer (tempers flared but we made up quickly)-- and I was falling asleep after supper!

Thanks for including the pictures. That is one cute couple! A cliche, but they look like they were made for each other. And on top of that I bet he's a good kid, too, isn't he? :loveya:

I'm totally relating to your litany of the high cost of everything, Syd, and of finding out that what they THOUGHT the trouble was, wasn't what it was -- but you still have to pay for the effort it took to discover that. ("Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House" w/ Cary Grant comes to mind.)

Altho you arrived disgusted, the positive vibes generated by our loving circle appear to be restoring your mood somewhat. I hope this helps, too. A good night's sleep, if you can get it (watch C-SPAN if you're wired), will also help put a new complexion on everything (except your wallet).

Thanks for sharing your trials and tribulations, Sydnie. You handled everything like a champ!

My son is at his first boy/girl DJed dance party tonight. He practically had a chicken on the way over there, asking me to turn around, he was so nervous. But then when he got in the door, he turned around and gave me the thumbs up, and no phone call to pick him up early so I hope he's having fun.

I know we all have shitty days now and then. I am trying to find the good in a day like today and, as you said, those pictures do go a long way to remind me that life holds many joys too.

You'll have to let me know how your son liked his first dance... and how many times he danced. LOL Breaking the ice for that first dance is always the hardest but I know he will have overcome his "chicken" and enjoy himself.

BTW, I found this little bunny, just waiting for you to adopt it the other day. I have been caring for him until I saw you again.

81. Rubs some KOEB karma on Sydnie
Oh, dear! I COMPLETELY understand trying to get by on around $20,000 a year (except I'm not getting child support on any regular basis, but I also only have one child).

Try to keep thinking to yourself: it's for my house and for my future and that money doesn't seem so important.

I do, however, have one minor recommendation to make: get a new mechanic! $749 is way too expensive to pay for brakes. Do you have anyone who can recommend a friend to do car repairs? I have someone who does that minor stuff for me. In fact, he's putting just the new front brakes on my car for the cost of the brakes ($30), turning the rotars ($20) and his work ($60). I trust him because he does his own work on his cars. One thing you can do is find an area trade school who takes folks cars to let the students work on them. It's supervised by the vo-tech professor and, I've found, that they do a BETTER job because they're eager to learn and want to impress both their teacher and the car owner.

If there's one thing I've learned being a single Mom, it's how to be frugile and still get a good return!

's again and I hope your weekend goes better!

93. They did major brake work and I agree, my son is dreamy! LOL
My ex is a mechanic so I do have a connection or two for the repairs. They had to replace both front pads and rear drums, rotors and calipers. They also did an much needed oil change and replaced a thermostat that was causing a small fluid leak. This guy knows my situation and all in all, it was a fair deal. He is a one of the good guys and I trust him not to take me to the cleaners too badly. After I split with my ex, I took the car that the ex used to maintain to him when I had emergency work to do on it. It was a money pit for me to keep and he encouraged me to get a newer vehicle. Not that he didn't want to take my emergency money, he just knew I could do better with a newer vehicle. Since I got this van, I have popped in several times for him to tweak things that he never charged me a penny for. I suppose it all comes out in the wash and it all needed to be done for sure. I was prepared for that expense ... it's everything that has followed that I wasn't prepared for.

Things will turn around soon, I just know it. But ... for tonight ... I am just feeling a tad bit "sorry for myself". This, too shall pass. :::keeping my fingers crossed::: :)

That and the other stuff... OK... sounds more reasonable now. I was just trying to imagine paying that much for two shoe and two disc brakes and thought, "Hmmm... that's not right."

OK... :)

(My dad wouldn't let me drive until I could change the oil, change a tire, gap a plug and knew the how to talk intelligently about a car so I wouldn't get ripped off by mechanics. ;) )

154. Beautiful couple and bet you are
a proud mom, as you should be. At least son got his shower and to the prom and mom got to see him off. Twenty years from now that will be the memory of the day and if you do remember all the things that went wrong you will be able to laugh about it.
The joys of having well water are varied. No chlorine, fresh, cold water and no quarterly bill. Until something goes wrong, then it seems the repairs want to make up for the lack of the quarterly bill. And always at the worst time. (The other down side being if you lose power you lose water too.)
You made it through and one day you will get your head above water for more than a breath. On cars at least you have a trustworthy mechanic, finding out they are rare and feeling lucky I have one or two here I know I can trust.

Have a happy one. You deserve it especially after the past couple of months you've been through.

Is your son old enough to make you breakfast in bed? I recommend it if he is, even if the toast is burnt and the rest is just cereal in a bowl with a glass of OJ (not actually in the bowl with the cereal), it will be the most precious meal you've ever had.

I was talking to my neighbors and told them I needed to go so I could watch the only news show I like (I already knew they didn't like all the arguing and shouting and entertainment that passes as "news" these days), so they asked what it was. I told them and they said they would tune in tonight.
They're an older couple and hate what's being done to this country under Bush.

26. David Richardson needs to be recruited by the Dems.
He may have voted for Bush in 2004, but his interview sounds more like a Southern Dem, to me.
Especially the parts about personal liberty to vote and that women who fought hard to get the right to vote in the country shouldn't let a man - their pastor - tell them how to vote.
He's a Dem in red clothing, if you ask me. :)

46. Actually, I know quite a few smart Southern Baptists
The problem is that they're overshouted by the wingnuts.

My father is Southern Baptist - he's intelligent, an engineer and a Civil War historian, certainly NOT a thumpin' nut. My neighbors also are Southern Baptist and have similar views. I think there are A LOT of Southern Baptists who have been so brainwashed into voting for Republicans that they don't realize, like I suspect David Richardson is, that they're Democrats.

Oh, I've also been meaning to ask how your job search is coming? I've offered to re-do Sharon's husband's resume based on what my friend who does this for a living suggested to me and I'll offer it to you. I'll tell you this, after he showed me how to re-do my resume and what employers are searching for, I got an interview a day for a week and a half and three call-backs. I'd be more than happy to help you, too.
Sometimes it's all in the resume. Seriously.

28. I haven't been here in KOEB for a bit, but I have something IMPORTANT
Your help is very much needed, and I knew the KOEB would lend support for our own DUer, Andy Stephenson, dedicated advocate and educator for election reform.

He is to undergo surgery next week at Johns Hopkins for pancreatic cancer, and like so many Americans, does not have health coverage.

We have raised most of the money and thanks to all that have donated. Thanks for all of your prayers and good wishes and positive energies and love.

BUT, we haven’t raised all that is needed. The total so far is just over $32,000. We need to raise at least $50,000.00. Andy’s surgery is Tuesday, May 10. This weekend, even though he is sick, he is participating in a conference in Ohio on of all things, election reform. He is tirelessly working for our democracy, he is still trying to make a difference. Let’s help him, please let’s raise all the money he needs.

Every nickel, dime, buck or ten-spot helps reach the important goal of getting Andy well again, and back doing what he cares about: fighting for our democracy!

Please give if you can, and blast this out to your networks!

WAYS TO DONATE:

via PayPal: http://www.paypal.com
After logging in at paypal, choose "Send Money" and enter Andy's email address as the recipient:
Andy_Stephenson@comcast.net
(note there is an underscore like this: Andy_Stephenson)

Or at Amazon.com:
http://s1.amazon.com/exec/varzea/ts/my-pay-page/P2TRHRV... .
or
http://tinyurl.com/bnu79

If you prefer check or money order,
please mail to:
Andy Stephenson
P O Box 25624
Seattle, WA 98165-1124

!!!IMPORTANT!!!
If you are sending something, please pmail sfexpat2000 or email Beth at info@dougzilla.com with the amount of the donations. She is the official bean counter and the donations have to be properly tracked and totaled to keep Johns Hopkins happy.

Please folks, we have made such a difference. We have united to help one of our own and I thank you all. Let’s meet the goal, let’s take the stress off of Andy’s shoulders and let him go in to surgery ready to fight the tumor, not worrying about fighting the accounts payable department.

Thank you all!

AND VISIT HERE, help us keep it kicked! http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=104x3608367

55. Well and happy! A teeny tad tired
from trying to help with the important task at hand, but not nearly as tired as others who have nearly literally been working 24 hours 'round the clock for a week and a half on this effort for Andy.

Sfexpat2000 and Flyarm, particularly, have had to have buckets of icewater hauled to their computer chairs to take down the swelling of their typing fingers and telephone ears!

Hundreds of wonderful people contributing whatever they can to make this effort a success.

The response has been wonderful, but the last part of the effort is as important as the first part, and so we are still workin', asking everyone for whatever they can contribute and to send out to their lists.

31. The story about the pastor throwing Democrats out of his church is yet
another chilling story in a growing cluster of disturbing stories.

Keith seemed really upset with this one, especially at the end when he quoted the man he interviewed ' And God wouldn't appreciate it either.'

The man had some very persuasive things to say when he talked about women having fought long and hard for the right to vote, the logic seemed to leave him of course when he referred to homosexuals. They apparently have no civil rights as taxpaying citizens that are being violated by Good 'Christian King' George's policies.

Car Thief Reports Theft Of Car

POSTED: 6:20 am EDT May 5, 2005
UPDATED: 7:06 am EDT May 5, 2005

BALTIMORE -- Memo to crooks: When you steal a car, and it goes
missing, it's not a good idea to report it stolen.

Baltimore police said that's what Gregory Alston did Tuesday morning.
Alston called police to say his white Nissan Maxima had been stolen
from in front of his apartment building.

But the car wasn't his. Police said he stole it at gunpoint two weeks
earlier. It turns out the victim had spotted the car and called
police, who towed it away.

So why did Alston call police? Investigators said he left his wallet
in the car and wanted it back. Alston has been charged with armed
robbery, possession of a stolen car and a handgun violation.

Detective Gregory Jenkins signed off his report by writing, "Again,
this really happened."

I made it safely through route 24 to the vets and for the first time did not see a wreck on that stretch of road. Though almost saw one on my side of the river. (Don't know what it is about Rt 24 and wrecks but the vets said there had been at least one everyday this week)

I thought it was the perfect dumb criminal story.

I noticed they used that one in the newsletter. But they neglected to mention it happened in our great state of Ohio.

Thanks again -- If this helps, we owe you big time.

110. No, no, Crispini is the one who's in NYC this weekend
and we're expecting her to come back from that wedding towing the "prey" she has "bagged" in the pink fur handcuffs.

Why do I keep remembering this scene from one of the "Mystery Science Theater 3000" movies--an Ed Wood classic called "The Violent Years"--in which a gang of girl delinquents runs across a couple making out in a car, ties up and gags the girl and leaves her in the car, and then takes the guy back out into the bushes and...!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The leader of the gang even ends up pregnant later!

I love what the guys from the show had to say about that in their book, too: something like, "Guys, forget it. Nothing like this is EVER going to happen to you. Never."

Then again, if Crispini returns with her handcuffs full, history may be made.

"Come on, little fella!"

173. Dear, the "boss" is the kid
And sleep was really SLEEP.

Oh, I got it! Now, now, calm down!

Anyone who has kids knows who the "boss" in the family is (unless of course, you have a fully-loaded Mustang GT with a 5.0 engine, in that case - THAT'S "The Boss." Or, of course, unless you're married to Bruce Springsteen).

The boss is the guy or gal who demands and is afforded the most attention and, in normal households, that would be the child.

The "co-worker" was the husband. The "boss" is the kid.

Seriously.

The boss is and always has been the kid. Yes. I'm technically the boss, but everything I do, I do for the kid. I'd be happy living in two rooms making enough to pay the meager rent and shovel some gruel in my mouth - which is basically how I lived before the kid. I don't bust my ass for me. I don't need much. However, I want much for the kidlet.

And, I don't have any co-workers. So I get to actually sleep. Heh.

Hah! Edith Prickley here. And let me just tell ya, as one television professional speaking on another one, that Keith Olbermann is quite the newscaster. I never miss his show. Then again, *Mr.* Prickley sure wishes I would! *bah!* I just know that if he were doing the news with Floyd Robertson, he'd be as understanding of Floyd's little problem with alcohol as he was of his old colleague Pat O'Brien's voice mails.. *bah!* Did I tell ya Pat O'Brien sent ME one of his voice mails? Said he wanted to "Get Crazy With Me And Do Some Coke." Called him back and said, "I'll meet you down by the vending machines in ten minutes"! *bah!* But seriously, folks, you'll never find Olby pullin' those kinds of shenanigans....*pregnant pause* Yeah, I'm sorry about it too!

Oh well! Gotta go get the show ready. Guy Caballero's callin' me, and lemme tell ya, when that guy calls, you come...well, that's not what *Mrs.* Caballero says, but you get my meaning! *bah!* See you later, all!

152. Speaking of kitties...
I'm taking my son this weekend (his birthday) to the pound to pick out a new doggie (or puppy).
He misses his Blue and Trooper's tried to play (bless his heart, he really has, but he's an old man! He's nearly 13!) with Ramzey, but it's just hard on the old feller. He'd rather sit under Mommy's feet or on the futon behind the computer desk.
Hell, *I* miss Blue, but, you know... two dogs in a house of this size is just right - not to mention I'm wasting the HUGE fenced in back yard I have if I don't (yeah, yeah, yeah...I wannanother puppy).
Is it too soon, you think? I miss, miss, miss Blueser, but I have all this love to give, this home to give, and, now, the money to give it.
I don't want to rush in...I don't want Ramzey to think something as precious as a pet is expendable. You know. I know this - he doesn't.

156. You sound like you're ready, Clark. And time is different to a child.
. . . Summer vacation when we were kids seemed like it would never end, remember?

It'd probably be good for Trooper to have a little one to look after and grandfather, too.

161. Its not too soon
If you and Ramzey are ready there is definitely a puppy at the pound that needs you two. A new puppy won't replace Blue at all, it will be itself and win your heart with its own loving, funny and even aggravating ways. And that is how you explain it to Ramzey if you need to. People are made with unlimited space for love in their hearts and loving a new person (or animals) doesn't replace the love you had for the old. You can never love too many people (or animals).

168. I said "this" weekend
realizing that it is "this" weekend. Ramzey will be 6 on the 14th.
Time doesn't mean a thing when you're out of work, either, apparently. I knew what I meant, just wanted to make that clear. Doh!

And... I meant that we will go on the 14th or 15th to look at puppies and doggies at the pound. Ramzey and I have agreed we'd like another cocker (easier for Mommy to take care of) or a lab mix (Blue was VERY large - a real lab is about 50 to 60 pounds. Blue was 75.) Not to take away from BlueBlue, but he was hard to handle when he got sick. I'm only 5'1" and that strained me so to have to try and carry him - it's just something that, now that I've been through it, I can honestly say that I can't do that again.

I can put in a "order," so to speak. I can actually have them call me when they get a cocker mix or a lab mix. Of course, the way karma is going in my life at this point, maybe just hikin' it up and heading out to the pound is what we just need to do.

171. Raven is a cocker/lab mix
but looks like a miniature black lab. She only weighs 27 pounds. Its hard to get a picture of her because of her color, her shiny fur and she never stays still. I can understand the weight thing since Zaiden is a 108 lb horse. When he needed medicine put on his head that burned it was a struggle for me even though he is well trained. But no training holds a head still when it hurts to be touched.
Betting there is a lucky puppy out there that will be perfect for you.

179. My very first dog, Tuffy. was a lab/cocker mix
Ahhh... whadda cutie he was.

What a smart, sweet, precise little dog. He died of, well, we don't know.. he had seizures. But he was 13, so, that's not too young for a doggie in 1986.

180. Hi Clark!
Congratulations on your new job! I finally got around to donating so I can post in the clubhouse. I'm sure you & Ramzey will find the perfect puppy (or doggie), keep us posted on the hunt!

182. Any dog would be lucky to have
a home with you and Ramzey you know. Keep me up to date on the puppy search. Raven is very shy about strangers, and we never could get her over it. She is perfectly happy to never have to see anyone but me and the hub. Off to get flowers for the yard now. Have a great weekend, and really relax for a couple days. You deserve it.

188. Raven is a very skittish
girl. She was never abused and always loved but just does not trust people beyond me and the hub. And we have tried, poor little thing just shakes so bad, yelps and pees herself. I decided it wasn't worth putting her through all that. Now when people are over we let her go hide. She is happier that way.

170. I would not worry at all.
If Blue could tell you this, he would say: "Don't mourn for me so much that you can't give your heart to some other poor dog out there who needs a home. My life is done and there's nothing that anyone can do about it. But you CAN go out and save another dog from having to join me really soon, for no other reason than that he is not wanted. Don't be selfish with your love of me. Pass it on to another dog who needs it."

You know when it's right to get another pet. You know it when you are enough past the initial pain of the loss of one you loved to admit that you want life back in your house. You want to love again.

Ramzey knows this too, I'm sure. Deep in his heart, he feels as you do. You're going to make him a wonderful birthday.

162. I couldn't help it, I just found this great little comment
on Inside Cable News and had to post:

http://insidecable.blogsome.com/

Read the first, very brief, story.

It says all that needs to be said...in three sentences!

Oh, and Gogi: Gacking can be bad, but in your case it's just funny. :-)

163. Hi again Whirls
Edited on Fri May-06-05 11:27 PM by CC
we must be the sleepy bunch today, lots of us falling a sleep after dinner.

Gizmo got a. "he is doing good but does need chemo" at the vets. They will be mailing the pills straight to me. The vet feels that he is fighting it pretty well and even gained weight since his last visit. So crossing fingers the chemo helps since the ferret is fighting hard to stay alive.
But all in all was a reassuring visit.

175. Just found this - sorry for the late reply, CC.
. . . I'm really glad Gizmo is eating and gaining weight. He's so cute and he has so much personality! Thay picture you posted yesterday was too cute for words.

But I can also understand why you're tired. Feedings every couple of hours at the beginning, plus your work. And taking care of a household and trying to be a good companion -- it takes a lot out of you.

Maybe things will start to even out now. I hope Giz tolerates his chemo well.

164. This church story makes me so sad.
I know the area well - spent a summer interning at the neighboring Methodist church while in seminary.

And let me just say that this behavior is not indicative of the beliefs of most people in Waynesville (or East Waynesville, or Canton, or Lake Junaluska....)

Good for this guy for standing up for what he believes is wrong.

167. The church thing is sad
because in the end it will split the congregation. The minister needs to look over tax laws too. (And the bible and a few other things) It will also give other groups more ammo to use against Christians. (Though like the idea of calling those types Fristians)
The up side is it does make the bush-bots look out of control and will go a long way to separating Church and State again. Some of those that think they want more God in government would have a fit if they had to conform to someone else's idea of how they should practice religion.

The rest of us just have to remind the world that most Christians are normal everyday people that practice their religion quietly and through their acts.

them around here somewhere. We will get Hope up and running one day so she can post her pics here without the link. She has some beautiful ones.
I do like seeing others, even off the web because it gives me ideas. See you later if you are on here. Tell Mr. Whirls hello from the ferretessa that thinks you should have a ferret or two.
