Mirena IUD?
I go back and forth between wanting a tubal and just an IUD; I know I do not under any circumstances want children from my body.

Anyone have experience with this? All of my chick friends here have either had tubals or are happy on the pills.

This would only be to protect myself in case of very bad things; I am monogamous and my husband has had his snip already. I just don't trust Roberts, and an IUD can hang around for a long time. I'm looking at 15 to 20 more years of fertility (I'm not quite 30) and I've heard and seeen many bad outcomes after tubals - heavier periods, longer, painful mittelschmertz... And if my mom was any clue, PMS from hell. Besides, I'm not sure I can afford any more surgery.

Anyone have any experience?

1. If you haven't had a child, you shouldn't get one.
I asked about one a few years back and my doctor said it works best in women who have had at least one child. Apparently it fits better in those women whose uterus has been stretched by pregnancy. I think the Mirena website might say something about it.

I have one now, and it's been okay. No discomfort, but I'm wondering how it's affecting my PMS. Of course, I'm 8 months post-partum, and also breastfeeding, so there could be any number of things affecting my hormones and thus my mood.

2. Since I'm not planning on spawning...
Considering that the unstretched U is about the size of an 3/pound apple, and the stretched U is about the size of a 2/pound apple, and the Mirena is about a half-inch long... I'm not seeing that there'd be a big problem there. I'm thinking the difference might be in insertion, regarding cervix size. Apparently the dilation can be painful in those who have not had a cervical dilation in the past; I've had - to my disgruntlement - several, for various reasons.

Thanks for the input.

3. i had an IUD a million years ago and it caused very heavy periods
and cramping and an increased chance of infections

I don't know how the new devices are

If hubby is snipped, why bother? seems a pretty drastic measure on such a big "if"

4. Any updates?
Hi Politicat,

Just wanted to check in and see if you decided to go with the Mirena IUD? I'm on the quest for something new...right now I have the Implanon implant, which was great for the first two years but now making my cycle really wacky and really weird. I can't take pills as they give me killer migraines and make me a real pain to be around, and my partner and I may have kiddies in the future, but we're definitely not ready yet. ANyway, I just wondered if you'd gone ahead with the IUD and what your gyno told you about not having had kids yet? I've heard mixed reviews; outside the US, I think pretty much every woman has an IUD!

Thanks!

Jean Louise
