Why? Why?
I really slipped tonight. A whole fucking six pack and eight joints. I wish I was dead. Sorry I let you all down.

But today is a new beginning, you start over again.

Get to a meeting and get phone numbers you can call
anytime.

4. Be gentle with yourself
Who among us is perfect? We're human and on top of that we're addicts. What did we expect, perfection?

It's always two steps forward and one step back. The important bit, though, is that you pick yourself up and dust yourself off.

5. Because you're probably an alcoholic
It's not a moral weakness, it's a medical condition. And you're in fabulous company: Stephen King, Ann Richards, Eric Clapton, Ann Lamott, Harry Crews, just to mention some of the most famous. Those people all found a way to live without drinking, and you can too.

And you didn't let us down. Alcoholics goof up - we've almost all done it. I'm sure not the only one who ever swore "never again", only to find myself wasted a few nights later. But eventually sobriety "took", and it's been almost four and a half years since I felt the need to take a drink.

There's a lot of even longer recovery here, but probably none of us did by ourselves on the first try - if anyone did, then he or she is the exception to the rule. Don't beat yourself up, just keep trying. If I can do it, anyone can.
