no more HFCS starting tonight. My husband and I went through the kitchen
and tossed out anything with High Fructose Corn Syrup. It is in practically everything. You think you are having something innocent like Campbell's soup, and there it is. It is in yogurt, it is in "natural" cereals, in whole grain bread. Jeez. We are being loaded up with a sugar compound made from genetically modified corn and the country's weight is going up as it is being used in more and more products. I will check back and let you know if we lose some weight.

3. What about Kashi cereals?
Edited on Thu Oct-11-07 12:34 PM by lizerdbits
They do have some sugar (usually evaporated cane juice or granulated sugar) but I doubt they use HFCS. I have some of their granola bars and they're very good. Just a little sweetness but nothing like a "standard" granola bar that's more like a candy bar.
Don't know about bread, I don't eat much of it and often make my own when I do but maybe a health food store will have some without HFCS. I guess I'm fortunate to like cooking so I never had to adjust.

6. the site I checked with said that you have to check the labels on every
single thing...at least half the cereals have HFCS, even ones calling themselves "natural", even some of Paul Newman's foods. They said some of the granola bars were loaded with it. Be careful and read it and don't assume because it is "healthy" it is free of this poison.

10. I do read labels
I haven't seen any HFCS on any of their products I've tried, I was suggesting checking the labels on their cereal. I don't know if there are any regulations involving calling something "natural" and I don't think it really means anything. Arsenic naturally occurs in the environment but I don't want an arsenic bar. HFCS probably qualifies as "natural" since it's made from corn as opposed to something with hydrogenated oils or artificial sweeteners.

14. I am new at this but am learning that they are starting to "hide" it under
different names...."fructose/sucrose syrup", etc. I think HFCS is unnatural in the sense that they use a process to convert corn syrup to make this stuff which is sweeter and save themselves money. They sure aren't doing it for our health.

4. I've been off of HFCS for about a year now
I also started being more physically active. However, I have not been dieting, just trying to eat healthy. I've lost about 40 pounds without even really trying!

I check labels on EVERYTHING I buy. I try to buy mostly organic. Kashi is very good, they have cereals, frozen meals, nutrition bars, and lots of other items. I also buy Luna bars (nutrition bars for women). Nature Valley cereals and TLC crackers are good too.

7. that is awesome....is there any safe pizza? I am assuming no as I have heard
that there is HFCS in tomato paste but I thought I would check with you just in case...I don't eat it often but I love it (not enough to consume HFCS, tho)

11. I think a lot of tomato sauces have a lot of sugar
may or may not be HFCS. When I make my own I add a pinch of sugar to cut the tartness but it doesn't taste sweet like a lot of bottled sauces do. There are some good recipes out there using canned tomatoes (which I do since I don't have good fresh tomatoes year round- who does?).

9. Here's a serious question.
Edited on Thu Oct-11-07 10:57 PM by jaredh
Why is HFCS worse than regular sugar? Isn't HFCS just another form of sugar? I would think they should have roughly the same effect on blood sugar, body fat, and other health issues, but I could be mistaken.

12. I think the main issue
Edited on Fri Oct-12-07 07:04 AM by lizerdbits
is that it's in so many foods that the amount of sugar you're getting really adds up even if you're not eating sweets. There was a peer reviewed scientific article a couple of months ago I believe about it did something regarding the liver but I can't really remember. I can try to dig it up, but I think someone posted it in Health.

Here's the thread from March:
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=222&topic_id=18300
A little down in the thread is a discussion regarding the fact that fructose is also in fruit.

13. I read the reason and it was a bit complicated to me but basically the article
said that real sugar raises your blood sugar 100% and HFCS raises it 200%. The body then sends it to the liver where it is metabolized before anything else (leaving fats, etc around) and it is converted into more fat. The brain can't read that you have eaten and there is no normal satiation feeling, so you eat more. One thing almost all articles say is that when corporations starting substituting HFCS for sugar to save money, the weight of the United States people began to rise. Apparently it is the same rise...more HFCS, more fat Americans. Europe and other countries don't use this and don't have the obesity problems we do. It is all about money, killing us and our kids.

15. 48 hours later: my appetite is down about 80%....I just had lunch at 3pm
because I wasn't hungry. Breakfast 8 am was one Starbuck's Chai without latte and a Martin potato bun toasted with butter. Lunch was a salad and some goldfish. I crave salad...and have never before craved that. It feels so different. Anyone else crave the good stuff for a change?

17. Just you wait...
until you you're up to 1-2 pounds of vegetables (with salsa, yum) in one meal. I've been there when dieting eating only protein and non-starchy veggies.

18. First week weight loss= 3 pounds. I am happy with it because I don't feel
like I am dieting, we have eaten out several times, and I am eating a lot more healthy foods. To celebrate, we stripped down the refrigerator and washed it out...just in case there were some HFCS's hiding out in the crevices. Did find some lurking in a jar of Major Grey's Chutney and tossed it.
