1. Mixed feelings about it
The inventor claims it will give a woman time to escape. There are many situations where escape would be impossible and she would be in even more danger from her attacker. But I do love the idea of it. I can't believe there are critics who call the device barbaric. Ummm...excuse me, but rape is barbaric.

2. If it causes enough pain for the male to pull out
And allow the women to escape, it's a good thing. If enough women use it to the point it actually becomes a deterrent, it's a good thing. If the rapist escalates to murder because of thwarted control and domination, it's not so good. If rapists become aware of the device, and are not as impulsive as some, they could make the woman remove it, also not so good. I like the part about it getting stuck on the penis and having to be surgically removed.

3. Very true
With word out, it could also trigger more cases of anal rape.

4. I was just about to post this story here!
The "but it's barbaric!" is such fucking horseshit. 1.) As others have said, RAPE is the barbaric act 2.) You don't have to worry about it if you aren't going out raping women and 3.) No amount of physical pain can compare with the emotional pain left by a rapist. As painful as it is, it doesn't even "equal the score"--not even close.

11. GREAT points

What will it take for even a significant minority to see them? I despair that it won't be in my lifetime.

12. Haven't you ever noticed that anything that harms a penis is barbaric
and anything that harms any part, piece, or entity of a woman is par for the course??? She probably asked for or wanted or needed it

13. that's the argument that gets my goat...
...'it's barbaric'

Uh-huh. And RAPE is NOT?

That's what I mean about this society. Somehow, rape is acceptable. For a woman to protect herself and fight back in any she can, isn't?

WHAT a double-standard we have here.

5. Can't get the article up but my initial thought on this is that it will
make women even more 'responsible' for being raped ("Why didn't she fight back? Why didnt' she use that anti-rape condom?") This is just one more idea that puts the responsibility for sexual assault back on the victim.

6. I don't think so
I don't think this will cause more people to assume that women should wear it - quite the opposite...I think more people will spout the "that's so barbaric!" line like in the article. They won't encourage women to wear one...they will look for stories to put it down as harmful and dangerous. That's my opinion.

7. To clarify-
with regard to rape prevention, we already put so much emphasis on changing women's behavior without addressing the root cause of rape, which is the behavior of the rapist. And I think you're right, some people will blame her for damaging his penis, since after all, :sarcasm: women love being raped and are sluts who deserve it, he couldn't control himself since she threw herself at him in that mini-skirt and after all, boys will be boys...:sarcasm:

8. I totally get what you're saying
But I think this may be so drastic (to the mainstream) that for once they stop looking at the women and look at the (fucked-up root cause of rape) act of violence that causes it all.

I for one think this technology is only a plus, and can ultimately be seen as a plus for feminists.

9. This doesn't seem practical to me.
How much would each one of these cost and how long would they last? It would have to be dirt cheap and widely available before it could possibly make any difference in the rate of rapes.

10. Where can I buy one
Two for me and one for my male partner.

Men can get anally raped too.
They just don't talk about it.
