As the price of gasoline climbs, so does the number of thieves stealing it.
Tuolumne County Sheriff's Department records show reported fuel siphoning cases for the first four months of 2006 are up 45 percent over the same time last year.
Since the beginning of the year, the Sheriff's Department has responded to 51 calls from private citizens and business owners who complain someone has stolen fuel from their tanks.
It isn't much better in Calaveras County, where the Sheriff's Department has had more than 40 gasoline thefts calls. Although a count from last year was not available, Sgt. Bonnie Mathews said she knows there are more cases this year.
