Likely not resting in peace

On this day 49 years ago Sen. Joseph R. McCarthy, 47, died at Bethesda Naval Hospital in Maryland, and there is a story to tell here:

McCarthy was buried in a cemetery in Appleton, Wis.

Many people who did not like him have since visited this place --the late poet Allen Ginsberg to "exorcise the demons" and others to do earthier things.

What many people have not noticed is that a short distance away from Joseph R. McCarthy's grave is the grave of a Joseph McCarthy who died, also, in 1957.

It has doubtless been site of mistaken visits by many with a statement to make.

11. McCarthy was a catspaw, a dogsbody

Tailgunner Joe was a political nothing until he stumbled, almost by accident, onto anti-communism for his schtick. He'd rail against commies in the trades, commies in entertainment, commies in the media, commies in the government, then want to go out for a drink with his old pals from the newspapers or do a little star-gazing with the movie stars. He ruined people's lives, but he didn't mean for them to take it personally. This is not meant to excuse what he did, and his crimes speak for themselves. If you've ever seen the clip of Joseph Welch finally dressing McCarthy down ("At long last, sir, have you no shame?"), McCarthy looks more puzzled than anything -- why was Welch so mad? Didn't he "get" that this was all just theatrics?

Now, some of other little shits running around at that time, specifically Richard Nixon, Roy Cohn, and J. Edgar Hoover, knew exactly what they were doing. They wanted lives ruined, and they damn well meant it personally. Their own advancement meant nothing until others failed. And they were more than happy to use McCarthy as their front man to deflect the lightning and the backlash while they busied themselves with the more serious undertakings of eviscerating the unions, blunting criticism from Hollywood and the fledgling television industry, and ruining the eggheads at the universities.

Joe McCarthy has earned the piss poured on his head; but the piss he generates from drinking other people's piss should rain down on the heads of Nixon, Cohn and Hoover.
