Federal jury sentences 9/11 co-conspirator Moussaoui

RAW STORY
Published: Wednesday May 3, 2006

A federal jury has decided that al-Qaida conspirator Zacarias Moussaoui will receive a sentence of life in prison for not telling investigators what he later claimed to have known about the September 11, 2001 attacks on the Pentagon and World Trade Center.

After seven days of deliberation, the jury informed the court that it had come to its decision earlier this afternoon. The unexpectedly long duration of juror debate was read as an indicator that Moussaoui may have been spared death.

Earlier this month, jurors had found Moussaoui eligible for the death penalty after just 16 hours of deliberations. Eligibility had been largely considered the most difficult portion of the sentencing phase for prosecutors.

Moussaoui is the only person charged by the United States in connection with the September 11, 2001 attacks.

The 37 year old French citizen became involved in Islamic terror groups whil attending school in London in the mid-1990s. In 1998, he attended a terrorist training camp in Afghanistan. He has been linked to a Malaysia-based terror cell that aided two of the September 11 hijackers.

Verdict reached in Moussaoui case
Wed May 3, 2006 3:41pm ET

ALEXANDRIA, Virginia (Reuters) - A U.S. jury has reached a verdict in the sentencing trial of Zacarias Moussaoui, who faces the death penalty for conspiracy in connection with the September 11 attacks, the court said on Wednesday.

"The jury in U.S. v. Moussaoui has sent a note to the judge indicating they have reached a verdict," the court said in a statement.

The verdict will be read at 4:30 p.m. EDT.

Moussaoui has pleaded guilty to six counts of conspiracy in the only case brought in the United States in connection with the deadly hijacked airliner attacks that killed nearly 3,000 people.

18. Isn't "life without parole" redundant?
Anyway, wonderful news--it's not as though the prosecution had a slam dunk of a case.

36. No. Because Lifers can get parole in some states.
Texas, for example.

Reps have sponsored bills for a meaningful "Life Without Parole." Now, prosecuting attornies press for the Death Penalty, reminding juries that the worst killer COULD get paroled. Realistically, that possibility is quite remote.

Since juries might agree that certain guys should NOT be out on the street again, they tend to give the DP rather than Life.

The reason for Life Without Parole always being defated in the Leg? "It would reduce Capital Punishment."

38. I know you can get life with parole--I'm saying it's not really life.
"Life with parole" IS really life. Life with the possibly of parole after, say, 25 years should be called 25 years to life. So saying "life with/without parole" is imprecise, to say the least.

40. But if Texas Prosecutors could offer "Live Without Parole"......
Fewer juries would recommend the death penalty. Which most of the Texas Legislature thinks would be a bad thing.

11. will this be seen as a loss for bushco? i wonder.
the problem for them is this can be revisited or new information can come out.
i think they are not happy about this but they will declare victory and put on a mask.

29. Yes, they already noted
this was a real loss for the justice department. I'm sure they thought reliving the horrors of 9/11 would work.

I am so relieved. He should be locked up forever but even if I supported the death penalty this wasn't the case for it, not just because the gut is crazy. Part of it was the testimony of the prosecution FBI witness. One of them got tears in his eyes on cross examination talking about how they were stopped by superiors from doing the investigation they wanted to do and how that could have saved people.

It would be wrong to kill the crazy guy for not telling what he knew when it might have saved people while they promoted the FBI supervisor who stopped the investigation that would have saved lives, by the FBI's own testimony.

I could not have stood that. I am proud of this jury. Let this guy wither in jail.

In other words, the case was not exactly a slam dunk. And since we can no longer be confident that he was not tortured, we don't know how much of the crazy guy's craziness is the Bush monarchy's creation.

Seriously, thank goodness for the life sentence. Another dead martyr we do not need. I hope he spends all his days in prison.
