FATS DOMINO in the hospital, unable to perform at Jazz Fest
Fats who was scheduled to close Jazz Fest in New Orleans tonight is in the hospital. Reports are that he is not in serious condition and no reason given for his hospitalization but he will not be able to perform. Lionel Ritchie will close out the fest tonight at the Fairgrounds.

Let us send DU love and prayers to Antoine "FATS" Domino, the 78 year old from New Orleans Ninth Ward.

Blue Monday
Blueberry Hill
Ain't That a Shame and on and on and on

What a great performer.

1. One of the all time greats.
Took Nawlins style piano, in the style of the great Professor Longhair, and made it popular around the world.

Love and prayers to Fats.

Come on baby and be my guest
Come join the party and meet the rest
Everything is gonna be all right
So be my guest tonight

We're gonna dance to the rock 'n' roll
We're gonna even do the stroll
We're gonna Lindy Hop and Suzy Q
It's a special party just for you

My, my-oh-mine
Gee, you're so fine
Don't let me down
I'm the king but you can wear my crown

I'm gonna sing, my band gonna play
I'm gonna make you queen for a day
Everything is gonna be all right
So be my guest tonight

What an incredible talent and a wacky sense of humor. I hope he's up and tickling those ivories again real soon. This year's Jazz Festival Poster featured Fats.

7. Unless I miss my mark, he has diabetes
and heart disease, it wouldn't surprise me that he's having problems related to those issues.

11. I grew up listening to Fats Domino
The best show I ever saw was when he played for the 'last hurrah' before they closed Ponchartrain Beach Amusement Park. I got to sit just a couple of yards away, right in front of him.

Too bad Jazz Fest is too expensive for New Orleans residents to attend... and all those restrictions imposed by the corporations who now OWN it. I'm going to start calling it the "Non Orleans Gentrified Fest."

If you ever saw the Jazz Fest from the early 80's to the beginning, you would know it is completely different now. Yes, there are more toilets, but that is not worth the $40 to get in. It's better to spend the money at the local clubs in the evening where many of the Jazz Fest performers will be playing later. ;)

Anyway, I love Fats Domino. I hope he gets better soon.

19. The New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival is overhyped now...
...and you're right, the best thing about is the line-ups you find in the clubs around town during those weeks.

Of course, it might stop being the monster it is if they would cease the practice of booking acts that have little to nothing to do with jazz or New Orleans heritage.

23. I wonder if black performers
are aware of how much they owe Fats Domino, Little Richard, Chuck Berry, The Inkspots, et al, for the success they now have.
Saw Fats, in about '55, in an appearance at a used car lot in San Leandro, Ca. Most blacks, especially rockers, couldn't get into the real venues then.
Went to New Orleans for Mardi Gras in '65, wanted to go see him at a club, but it was still a bit early for some young white boys to go where he was appearing so we passed on the idea.
