Frist picks Cheney, Goss for Distinguished Service Awards
GOP House Speaker Frist picks Cheney, Goss for Distinguished Service Awards
RAW STORY
Published: Tuesday May 9, 2006

On Wednesday afternoon in the U.S. Capitol, Distinguished Service Awards will be bestowed upon Vice President Dick Cheney and former CIA Director Porter hose Goss, two former House members selected by House Speaker J. Dennis Hastert (R-IL), RAW STORY has found.

"The Congressional Distinguished Service Award was established to honor former Members of the House who have performed their duties on behalf of their constituents and the American people with such extraordinary distinction and selfless dedication as to merit special recognition," reads an invitation to the ceremony obtained by RAW STORY.

Porter Goss served as a Florida Congressman from 1989 until September of 2004, when he was tapped by President Bush to take over the CIA directorship. Cheney was formally a member of the House from Wyoming.

House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) nominated Jesuit Catholic priest, law professor, and former Massachusetts Congressman Father Robert Drinan and Ambassador Lindy Claiborne Boggs, who represented New Jersey for 18 years in the House and served as an ambassador to the Vatican.

The 2006 Distinguished Service Award Ceremony will take place on Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. in Statuary Hall in the United States Capitol.

Why not the Congressional medal of Freedom?
It seems to be the thing they give you if you screw up in a really, really big way.

8. What the hell. After a war criminal like Henry Kissenger got the
Nobel Peace Prize, all such prizes and awards became less than meaningless.

Although I agree with Nancy Pelosi's nominees, putting these people in a class with Cheney and Goss is about as insulting as one can get.

I don't know much about Lindy Claiborne Boggs, but I have followed much of Robert Drinan's career. If he has the class, style, dignity and values I think he has, he'll tell them, "No thanks."

9. There are two embarrassing mistakes in this story.
Frist is not the Speaker of the House, Hastert is

Lindy Boggs represented Louisiana, not New Jersey.

The rest is very interesting.
